Another strange bulllet

Hey Good Folks, I have another strange bullet. I feel like it is a Civil War, but can't find it in M & M's. It looks like some type of variant; maybe a Gardner? Any help/ideas would certainly be appreciated. Breezie

Breezy, I am not an "expert" on cw bullets, but a couple of things to consider. There appears to rifling on the bullet. Count them and that will tell you if it is more modern. The more rifling the more modern it likely is. Never seen it before but I would think carbine. I will give it to you, you do come up with some interesting ones.

How about a clipped-nose, solid-based, Mason & McKee #279 Dimmick bullet. Maybe they clipped the nose to put an "X" in it to make it more lethal (or so they thought).

Daryl, I looked at the M&M 279, but did they make one with a flat base? This bullet is larger in the 'waist' and smaller at the base.

CWDigger, I think you might be on to something when you said it looked carved. DugGap, I think what you see as rifling is carving. . . .but carved from what?

Yes they did. When I look at your bullet, I too think it has been carved - top cut , skirt shaved, etc.

It's as close as I can get in both the books and my head.

Daryl, If I were an 'old' lady, I'd yell B-I-N-G-O! Great job! I think you've nailed this one. CWDig, kudos to you for recognizing it as a carved bullet. I'm not really familiar with the Dimmick bullets, so will have to do some research. Thanks so much, Breezie

Also called "Swiss Chasseur" bullets, but they are now known as Dimmicks. These are associated with the 66th Illinois Western Sharpshooters, who used Dimmick Hunting Rifles. Nice gun huh?

In the back of the M&M reference the only .467 diameter bullet I can find is from Westley Richards of England. But I don't find any of that shape. Monty

Yup carved minnies are one of my favorite finds, they are something that has character the soldier carried this with them and they touched it probably every day, a very personal item, great find brezzie
