Well, it's hot weather so it's not likely a Christmas or Easter pageant. Passion play might work. If it's taken from the Masonic Temple perhaps
it's a Crusades type theme. I agree that the figure near the front of the parade looks possibly a centurion but the other helmets seem to have
spikes on them. Some of the Bedouin costumes look a bit king worthy. Perhaps a passion play put on by the Mason's or Knights Templar.

relevantchair you're talking about the flag on the back of the float and not the one borne by the man in the street?

I like the Opera House aspect because the costuming looks too uniform to be a hodgepodge production!

some of the img dates seem off and the OP img would have to
be between 1900- 1908 if dates are correct
and the july 4 1911 cant be right if the 1909 is correct

Oh, that's a nice time-line, Anduril. That helps.
Inix, small point, but that looks like a band leading a row of carriages to start the parade ?

tldr: This group came to town. June 22, 1909.
The Maccabees were huge in Michigan. Traverse City had sent their large contingents including marching teams, marching band, floats, sports teams, etc. to other towns, each year. 1909 was Traverse City's year. How did Maccabees dress for marching in parades ?

A little info from those newspaper sites where we get hit by a paywall,
It's broken up, but a lot can be understood :

The question is, How did Maccabee "Tents" and "Hives" dress for their parades ?
Following the long day, the whole shin-dig ended up back at the Opera House for evening festivities and prizes.
The flag on the float is interesting, but so is the Arab ? sign on the building to the right.

It looks like both Arab ? and Roman ? are seen in this parade.
When you google Maccabee, you see a surprising abundance of Arab ? and Roman ?.

I don't know if this is all circumstance, or if it might explain the way they are dressed?

Trying to understand what a "Maccabee Tent" might entail, I stumbled across this picture of a Degree Team from Detroit.

Maccabees.jpg

Edit: Merriam Webster

Definition of degree team

: a group of members of a ritualistic order who conduct the ceremonies and ritual connected with the working of an initiatory or other particular degree

This seals the deal for me. The costumed marchers must be Maccabees.
