Another old homestead site found in Oklahoma-wedding bands & more!!

My daughters and I recently found another old homestead site a couple of miles from the one we've been detecting and decided to go check it out yesterday. My oldest daughter took some pictures of the old foundation. The people who built this place certainly knew what how to plan a house site! It sits on a high bank overlooking a creek and a big bottom(a field). The house was a two room as far as I can tell and there are still a couple of old trees next to it. We haven't found where the barn or outbuildings were--still looking. We started metal detecting where we "think" the back door would have been. The kid smoked me on finds!! She started off with a wedding band :o! It was a ladies ring and says "CHECO"(?) inside--anyone know what that means?? and looks to be gold. She also found an 1898 Barber quarter and a 1913 buffalo nickel. About five feet from where she found the ring, I found a mans wedding band--its just gold plated and very thin. It also has some marks that I've never seen before and any information on these would also be appreciated! These finds are almost sad to me--I have to wonder why the man and woman lost their rings :'(. We also found a pocket knife, an A.J. Tower button(rain slicker)(I have found 2 of these at the other homestead site-this must have been a popular jacket/slicker), 4 brass reed things(?), 15 shotgun shells, a Merry Widows tin, a back off a pocket watch(?), some intricate iron pieces that say Peabody-Stiggleman Co., (maybe an old sewing machine?), and a cast iron foot(stove?). West and southwest of the foundation is a rocky outcropping and while metal detecting this, we started finding pieces of flint and maybe a couple of broken arrowheads. I found a trilobite, too!! At least I think that's what it is?! We'll be going back this week--the weather is supposed to be beautiful and in the 60's--the Oklahoma weather is really crazy right now, but I'm not complaining!! Here are the pictures and also a picture of a flock of wild turkey's we happened upon while driving to the site. Hope you enjoy!!! sandcreek4

The old homestead site was your first great find. Now you've began getting to what they left there for you. :D
Look for the old outhouse, and the garbage dump.....maybe will be the same.
Also, you have a nice orchard out from the house.....it should be a producer, too. Keep us posted....once in a lifetime site.

Nice finds Sandcreek!! i would definately agree on the school desk parts. Tell the daughter Awesome Find/Way to Go on the Silver!!!
Thanks lairmo!! The kid was thrilled to find the ring and coins! She was getting a little discouraged because she kept findings those horrible NAILS :D, but I told her everyone has to dig a few of them. sandcreek4

That trilobite is probably my favorite find you guys made! That's so awesome. Looks like a neat site to hunt...it's always nice when you can dig the junk and know that there's other cool stuff besides coins to dig up too (like the rings and stuff). Keeping hitting it!

Thanks hikeinmts--we're going to look for the dump/outhouse next. I think when the old house was torn down, most of the stuff was shoved over the bank and into the creek. There is old purple glass strung out all over the ground around the house. We'll keep ya posted! sandcreek4

Thanks Nate in Ohio--the trilobite was one of my favorite finds, too. I didn't know we had them here in Oklahoma--this has made me interested in fossils now! Here's an in-situ of the trilobite, I was shocked to see it staring up at me :o. sandcreek4

Re: Another old homestead site found in Oklahoma-wedding bands & more!!

Great finds. Looks like you and your family had an awesome day.

Re: Another old homestead site found in Oklahoma-wedding bands & more!!

Just think of the history you will find. Should keep you busy for awhile.

Re: Another old homestead site found in Oklahoma-wedding bands & more!!

Sweet finds! Keep hitting those old home sites.
You're right about the Okla. weather right now. 20* fluctuations seem to be the norm between one day and the next.
Heading out a bit to check on 4 other sites I just got permission to hunt. They're also part of the original Indian homesteads when the tribes were moved into the area by the Gov.

The history behind this stuff is what interests me, too!! I wonder if maybe this was a school house/church foundation, since we found parts of the school desk and organ pieces?! It's gonna be fun to see what else we find--thanks for the comments, Beans! Have a great day!! sandcreek4

Re: Another old homestead site found in Oklahoma-wedding bands & more!!

I believe you have found a schoolhouse rather than a homesite. Here are the reasons: aside from all the cast iron school desk pieces, you have found jeans/overall buttons, a pocketknife, organ reeds, harmonica reed plate pieces, and coins. These are all very common finds at schoolhouse sites. What you have not found is spoons, suspender clips, farm junk, or a barn site on the property.

Why is this important? The reason is because a schoolhouse site must be hunted differently from a homesite. In a homesite once you get out of the iron patch, the finds drop dramatically. When you get out away from a schoolhouse you still have good odds of finding coins. And with schoolhouses it is hard to know when they are worked out. You may even find coins a good distance from the structure itself, or stumble on the spot on the site where the school children had a habit of playing.

Best Wishes,

Buckleboy

What a site & what a hunt with your daughters to boot. Congratulations to your daughter.
You are lucky, my daughter thinks it's nerdy & wouldn't be caught dead with me, she is
to cool for this. Maybe someday the lights will come on.

Buckleboy, I think you're right about this being a school site--we haven't found any farm stuff. Today I went back and found some things down the hill from the foundation. I found an old pencil part, button(military eagle) and a knob piece that says H.M. MEIER, PAT. DEC 27, 1887, this knob has an acorn and oak leaves on it? Any ideas on this? I don't think we have found the "playground" yet. We're just going to go slow and see what else we can find. Thank you for your comments and they have made me look at this place in a different light!! sandcreek4

Thank you Deno--my oldest daughter is 13 and loves all outdoor stuff. The littlest is 5 and is very prissy! :D She loves Hannah Montana and as long as the portable DVD player holds out, we'll be doing fine. She said the other day (when I asked her to get out and dig with us), "This is so HUMILIATING!!", I never laughed so hard in my life!! ;D She's just not into this detecting!! Maybe someday the lights will come on with her, too!
