Another “mystery item” I found while walking along a small portion of beach on the Va. side of the Nice Bridge. When I first came across it there was a good portion of metal substance around it, which quickly fell apart over a brief time, so we ( sadly ) felt it was better to just brush it all away, which had us discover this item:

Made of solid wood
Possible rust on portions
Aprx, 3 3/4 inches long
Aprx. 1/2 diameter
Kind of a cigar shape, a bit wider ( plumper ) in the middle
Pin hole size hole in top
Ring indents that wrap around the top, first one begins aprx. 1/4 inch down from top, second one begins aprx. 1/2 inch down
Very light weight
End is a bit pointed but I am not sure if that was developed over its time in the water

I have had it put away for some time, pulling it out every once in awhile trying to figure out what it may be . . . A wooden peg/nail? A do hickey? A thingy-ma-bog? or a wazza-ma-call-it?
Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts are greatly appreciated ~ Thanks ~
:D

looks like a wooden handle for an old apple peeler or nut grinder

Hi Bogey, Your comparison picture of the clothes pin got me wondering if the item reminded you of one of the older types of clothes pins. The ones without the spring clip and missing a leg would come pretty close wouldn't it?

I have another guess. Stippling brush handle like the "Crafty" people use, fat and round at business end, and short bristled, ya don't drag paint with it, ya poke with it.......Not GE

Maybe part of a fishing bobber? They were wood before plastic.

This looks like a musket/rifle tompion to me. Tompions are pieces of wood that were placed in the end of the barrel of a weapon to keep out rain, dirt, leaves, etc. This might explain the rust and the other metal that fell apart.

This is a pic of a tompion used by Civil War reenactors. The end of this pic is cut off a little but the ends are usually pointed and rounded like the one you found. The top or ringed end differs depending on manufacturer.

That is DEFINITELY a petrified dinosaur dropping (corprolite)
but I am not so sure about the dinosaur part, or the petrified part,
for that matter!!!!

Well I kinda' lean toward petrified dropping, but I really think it's just a handle off some common implement. Monty
