Almost like a cross between a Plumet and a pencil drill type. I have found some drills (very few) but none have had the notch on the end like those. Id still bet it was worn around the neck. Anything about them in a artifact book from your area?

yeah but....the damage on the tips suggest to me that they were used for something....I mean...how is a decorative pendant gonna get broke like that if you are just wearing it?....and it isn't just one, a bunch of them are broke.

we find about twice what i have posted but i gotta look over at johns house there are more over there

they puzzle me???????

That is a logical observation for sure. Don't know what they are, but I know a fantastic few weeks worth of artifacts when I see em! Great stuff, Steve.....

Cool stuff but those pendants are melting my mind. They seem like more of a 'personal' item than flint tools. It must have have a silly amount of time to polish the rock by hand....not to mention working the neck without breaking it off.

this is what I want.....I want you to go here.....and make a book for us to buy....if you can't figure out how to do it I will do it for you for free....I want a book of yous guys's Mandan artifacts with full on explanations and as much history of the site you know.

I want the corn cobs, the hearths, the tools, the unexplaineds, the points (by style and material) etc...I WANT IT ALL!!!

I have made several of these books, ...fun and easy to do.

i like the idea
if only my friend kelly was still here he could...........

...make it a tribute to him.....

this is one of that type that we just found by the tree that fell over
it seems to fit in with the other 'melted plastic' unknowns

IMG_0069.jpg

flute tool used for making the flutes you find?

this is from the tree root....another piece from the 'melted plastic' culture

So how cold is it rite now? Getting chilly here 50s at night.

Another great selection of Mandan artifacts Steve, those drills are very interesting, at first they kinda reminded me of those Saharan nose/ear plugs, especially the round highly polished ones...were the Mandans into piercing?

it froze twice now but temps average 35-40 at nite and in the 60's in the day
it's ok as long as the wind stays down

i don't think the mandan people did that
i might go see this one guy at the ND state historical office here and ask him what he thinks about these pieces
my friend john has several of themalso.....i will try to get a picture of them and post it on this thread

he has a good knowledge of the 3 affiliated tribes which are the arikara, hidatsa, and mandan

today when we were picking the last of our arikara yellow beans we found 4 KRF scrapers in the row which was about 65 feet long....
...kind of a pleasant surprise

That's cool he knows about the arikara, hidatsa, and mandan...they were all mentioned in a book I'm reading right now "Black Kettle, The Cheyenne chief who sought peace but found war" it talks about the migrations of the Cheyene and how they allied with arikara, hidatsa, and mandan early on...Great book, almost as good as "Empire of the Summer Moon: Quanah Parker and the Rise and Fall of the Comanches, the Most Powerful Indian Tribe in American Histor" A thoroughly enjoyable and interesting read, one of my favorite books.

Very cool about finding those scrapers, without a doubt my favorite tools, usually in abundance with each one having it's own character...and KRF on top of it!
