I already posted this in the "what is it" forum, but haven't gotten any action yet. This thing has me banging my head against the wall! But, I do now believe the wood end of my find may actually have been the tip, while the metal parts may have been the handle. Though I imagine some of the handle is gone, if my theory is correct. In my mind, I'm imagining a "pointer stick" for a teacher, preacher, Civil war officer(wishful thinking again, lol) or the like. My best guess right now anyway lol. Here is the copy and pasted post I made earlier... help me out guys!
Just as I was about to wrap up my creek walk for today, I saw the beautiful green verdigris sitting on the bank. I grabbed it and pulled, and it just kept coming! I rinsed it in the creek, walked out of the woods, and have been wracking my brain ever since! What is this thing! The wood is tapered, like a small paintbrush would be, if you know what I mean. Thicker down near the metals and tapers to a thin spot on the tip. The item is 15.5" long as it sits now. I am only guessing that the green part is copper and the "goldish" color is brass? I'm not great at identifying old metals obviously Haha. The golden color metal is actually a thin sheet wrapped around another type of metal inside. Lead or pewter maybe? The metal tip is quite heavy. Either way, no part of the item is ferrous (magnetic). I feel as though I've seen or held something like this before and I just cant shake it! I dont even know this is necessarily very old. The wood is in great shape. But I do pull lots of nice leather and wood relics from this site, maybe good soil? Any help is much appreciated as I'm going about crazy now! I'm sure one of you will see this and just KNOW... I hope so anyway Haha! Thanks in advance for any ideas! 20200309_204914.jpg20200309_204928.jpg20200309_204937.jpg20200309_204955.jpg20200309_205006.jpg20200309_205010.jpg20200309_205032.jpg20200309_210129.jpg

I believe that to be an old fishing rod segment, the top is tapered so that the next metal base could be fit on. The bottom would have fit into the handle, most likely an old hardwood one wrapped in cork.

That would make great sense! My first thought was part of a weird arrow or fishing rod, but I moved on pretty quick. There are definitely fisherman in the area and I'm sure would have been even more so in the past. How old of a rod would you reckon? Just from the construction, it looks to be quite old. Also I noticed how unbelievably straight the wood grain is. Definitely a high quality and strong piece of wood. So I'm missing the loop where the line would run through on a fishing pole? Would that have been mounted to the metal part(I'd think so)? Cant believe I didnt stick more to the water related items... I went straight to whatever my mind could think up, Haha! I do believe you are correct, but any other opinions are welcomed. This piece looks cool enough, it's going in my "junk" display case for sure! None of it is junk, just unidentified or otherwise cool looking things etc. All my found marbles, cool expanded modern hollow point bullets, OLD FISHING TACKLE, parts and pieces of brass and copper... cool stuff that doesnt fit my collection lol. Thanks again for the response and I'd love any more info you have. I'll be researching as soon as I finish typing this reply! Keep the guesses and/or agreement with the ID coming! Happy, safe hunting!

Do you live near hogwarts? Looks like Harry Potter dropped his wand! But in all seriousness, given the context clues, it looks like an old fly fishing rod!

@Harrison... dont think magic wand didnt criss my mind at one point. It in all honestly did, lol. That's my imagination for ya though, I love that you mentioned it lol. I'm pretty positive it's part of a rod too now, but how old? Any way to tell? Most rods I've been looking at dont look like mine. Alot I see are from the 1850s and 1860s... wonder if this could be from a soldier at the winter camp I'm trying to find the water access for. Not gonna know that one for sure, lol. The primitive look of this, but also quality c oil instruction lead me to believe it is OLD. I wont stop until I find a satisfactorily similar rod connection to get a decent date range. If this is an 1860s rod, I may need to do more than just eyeball the spot! I wouldnt be surprised to find other cw relics in the area. May even be the camps fishing hole, though I'm sure they fished all up and down the creek most likely. Keep the info coming! And thanks for the replies so far! I hoped somebody would have a quick solve for me and TNet came through as usual I believe!

Good I'd I have some poles like that that come apart in pieces

I'm still unable to find anything similar to mine? I agree with the ID, but I've literally looked at pics of fishing poles from all over the world and through all time... even modern day. Nothing is even remotely as heavy duty as my piece is. What part of the rod are we thinking this is? The tip would be my only guess, unless I am thinking wrong on that one. I'd say maybe a homemade rod, but the work is so perfect it would be hard to believe. I have no clue what else it would be, I just NEED to find something that looks more like mine before I can be satisfied, lol. I'll be searching some more! I appreciate any further replies and more examples if anybody has something like this. It looks MUCH more thick and heavy than any examples I've seen so far. I feel confident the ID is right, but I need to see an example to make me happy Haha! Thanks again everybody! Just had a nice cleansing rain today... might be back on the creek tomorrow!

After re-reading Bob E Pins post, I have to agree with this being the segment just ABOVE the handle. I can see the next thinner and hollow metal segment (like I've been seeing in pics)sliding over the tapered wood. It was the fact I thought this to be the tip that threw me off. It didn't appear to be missing anything where an "eyelet" (where the line runs through, not sure of correct term)could have been attached etc, but that also makes sense if this is the "base" of the rod. Being that the heavy metal part of this would have been INSIDE the handle, makes sense as to why I haven't seen a segment so heavy... most online dont have the handle missing or removed. I think we can safely call this one closed. If anybody can find a picture of an old rod with the handle broken off, I'd still like to see an example that matches mine. I'd love to get an idea of date range too? My research was mostly looking for pics that matched, but I did realize that most wooden rods are quite old. They are still made today, but not commonly and I believe that other materials became popular pretty early. Any guess as to age? Closest examples I found were rods from the 1850s-1880s... anyone think that's a safe estimate? I'd love to hear what everybody thinks on age! Maybe I'll find some more segments out there... this thing is wonderfully preserved.
