Wow, 2 great hunts, and both ending the day with 3 Coppers. This is the site where a whole community just picked up and left during the depression. As you can see theres nothing left of these farms but piles of rocks where the structures once stood. There were aprox 40 old farms that no longer exist, :tongue3: giving me about 40 places to dig old coppers, LOL!

The backwards Large Cent is pretty bewildering, If anyone has ever seen this before, please fill me in. I hate finding coins that dont jive up to the book....The half cent was also a nice surprise, looks to be 1806 or 07 the crusted one has yet to show his date, so i have it soaking. Also found this bell and a few flat buttons,

enjoy the pics
thanks,

Sweet finds!! Three old Coppers and an error at that, just wonder if its a rare type or a common because from what I've read, there were many mistakes made minting in the early years!!

Nice FINDS!! Congratulations!
I would question that backwards reverse. It is like someone took another coin and presed it into the back of the metal or another coin was got stuck during the coining process and left it's impression on the reverse. That's just my opinion and I wouldn't give it any credit as I know very little of the minting process of LC's.

I dug a counterfeit lead Morgan dollar that was backwards as well. See if there is a seam that connects the two pieces. Great find!

Yeah, i was thinking the same thing, It would have had to be sandwitched between 2, because the head is facing the wrong way also, the words are indented also, not raised. Id have to say error at the mint.

I don't think that's a mint error. The metal looks like pewter!

I'd bet it's a contemporary counterfeit--and it is a better find than a normal LC.

Agreed an impression of a coin.

40 old farms that no longer exist....WoW....This site should keep you busy for the rest of your life. You stumbled in to a dream site. Congratulations on your awesome finds. That probable counterfeit is to die for. What a post.

Congrats on getting the Half Cent, hope you can get a positive date from it! The Bell and the counterfeit Large Cent are both very nice finds. I could not tell what the date was but it does appear to be probably done during the Hard Times when change was in short supply, so probably predates 1840s, but inquiring minds would like to know. I wonder if they used the same legit Large Cent for both sides or used two different ones, the details are not clear enough for me to attribute and see if that was the case. If they used two coins to do it, most likely they would be different varities or even from different years. I am not exactly sure what method they used to make a counterfeit like that, but would be interesting to know how they were done.

By the sounds of the area, I'm sure more super finds await you.

Great finds....

Sounds like you will be very busy for a while.... It would take me years to hunt 40 farms.....

Can't wait to see what else you find !!!

Based on the fact that the fake is a holed coin, I would have to say that it was done intentionally to be worn as a decoration. A Counterfeit would have been manufactured to pass off as the real thing. I would say it was worn as jewelry or a novelty.

Very interesting find!
