I've had this quite a while and had a few people guess but have never been told 100% or shown any reference material about it. I've played the Google game a few times and came up with some ideas but could never prove it. Surely someone will know exactly what this is. Dug it about a month after I started detecting... yeah it's time to ID it.

Measures a little over an inch high.

Try searching on "Army And Navy League" or "Army and Navy Republican League", also try "&" instead of "and".

I ran across this article about the California founder, COLONEL D. H. BRYANT:

http://www.mariposaresearch.net/santaclararesearch/SCBIOS/dhbryant.html

"To Colonel Bryant is to be given, also, the chief credit for the organization of the Army & Navy League, a Republican club of California, of which he was the president and commander for several years. This association is comprised of forty-four clubs, was organized in 1878, and has an active membreship of 32,000 men. "

It appears that it's a civic or philanthropic group in the late 19th and early 20th centurys.

There is also a "Womens Army and Navy League" you could look up.

Still no evidence that the pin is actually part of anyone's swag...

regards,

Jim

With that many members you'd think you'd get a good blast of hits from Google. I am guilty of never having put much effort into this, and maybe at some point I'll start doing some serious emailing to try and figure it out.

Im almost afraid to ask but are there any solder remains on the back? Anything at all that may provide a clue? Is it a pin?

Just looked, has the remains of a broken single pin at the top in the middle.
Thanks. A pic would be better. Maybe someone will see something or someone will know what it is to use the right combination of words.. Could it be a hat pin? Lapel pin?

I tried googling different combinations like US red blue enamel A.N.L. shield crossed rifle sword or sabre anchor pin or pendant Army Navy but nothing comes up yet that matches.

With all the key words above, I still cannot narrow it down. I need more words and/or remove the wrong words. :D Its a tough one to google.

This should be solvable.

Here's an old reply. I either never saw it, or didn't remember, so might help with a different path to look down.

"It's related to the Spanish American War.The emblem (crossed sword and gun over anchor) is the same as the one on Veteran's medals from that conflict (see: item# 240 in link below). The shield is also related to the Spanish American war.It (the shield)served later as emblem for the centennial of that event. That,in my opinion, means you probably have an Army Navy League pin like Steve pointed out or an Army Navy Lodge pin of a veteran's group.Sorry I can't be more precise."

I'll post a pic of the back at some point, but as I said just a small point sticking out of the top middle.

Just for interest here's the place it was found. Was a home early on, but now is a historic inn. I dug my Rochester Shriners medallion in the side yard right beside the flowers. This place was the first place Ironhorse and I hunted together almost 10 years ago.

I say there's a very good chance it's a stick pin.

If someone has a phone with the Android OS, you could try Google Goggles on this thing. I'd be interested to know the search results. It was just announced this week that GG is coming soon to the iPhone. Good luck with the ID.
