I've had this quite a while and had a few people guess but have never been told 100% or shown any reference material about it. I've played the Google game a few times and came up with some ideas but could never prove it. Surely someone will know exactly what this is. Dug it about a month after I started detecting... yeah it's time to ID it.

Measures a little over an inch high.

Perhaps representing some kind of marines on shipboard. Obviously military with the sabre and rifle , while the anchor makes me think of seaborne troops? Monty

Only a guess based on the initials and emblem devices, but possibly the Army & Navy League, as mentioned in this 1865 New York Times article (PDF download):

Thanks Everyone.

PBK, that's where I ended up also, and believe it to was suggested by an expert in American military several years back. The thing is I have never seen another or can not find any reference. Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll post it again in 5 years or so. :D

Mackaydon, nothing on the reverse.

kierdan, hotel site well to the North, think it screams American though.

Just a guess: :dontknow:

The Anti-Nazi League (ANL) was an organization set up in 1977 on the initiative of the Socialist Workers Party with sponsorship from some trade unions and the endorsement of a list of prominent people to oppose the rise of far-right groups in Britain. It was at its height between 1977 and 1981.

Would be a very old looking design for 1977.

If I did it was many years ago. Army Navy League was in my opinion the best guess, but there seems very little info. on the net, and nothing for pictures of any kind.

I must agree it looks older than 1977...just wanted to have my own guess. :tongue3:

I too am leaning toward Army Navy League. You are right, not much web based info on that organization. I searched that first. :read2:

It almost seems strange how little there is on it if Army Navy League. Makes me think if that's indeed what it is it's probably a fairly fair find. Maybe there was only 3 members. ;D

Im almost afraid to ask but are there any solder remains on the back? Anything at all that may provide a clue? Is it a pin?

Just looked, has the remains of a broken single pin at the top in the middle.

Try searching on "Army And Navy League" or "Army and Navy Republican League", also try "&" instead of "and".

I ran across this article about the California founder, COLONEL D. H. BRYANT:

http://www.mariposaresearch.net/santaclararesearch/SCBIOS/dhbryant.html

"To Colonel Bryant is to be given, also, the chief credit for the organization of the Army & Navy League, a Republican club of California, of which he was the president and commander for several years. This association is comprised of forty-four clubs, was organized in 1878, and has an active membreship of 32,000 men. "

It appears that it's a civic or philanthropic group in the late 19th and early 20th centurys.

There is also a "Womens Army and Navy League" you could look up.

Still no evidence that the pin is actually part of anyone's swag...

regards,

Jim
