I didn't get out to hunt but once this week. Lisa and I had decided to see if we could find a couple of sites that we've been meaning to get to that we'd found on an old map. The first one was in a cut out make by the electric company. We learned from one of our land owners that the site we were looking for was a blacksmith shop back in the day. Kinda' made that one a iffy site after learning that bit of info. We did find it and allll the iron that it had to offer and I came away from there with two little round bullets in my pocket for keepers. Because of all the debris and iron it was quickly placed on the back burner.
We hopped across the road and doodled around for a while. Found two dimes and penny. Talked to the owner and he took us to see the old spring that they kept their milk in long ago, to keep it cool. Had to crawl through privet to get to it. Neat place even though the creek had run dry. Another place to keep in mind for later.
Left there and headed for the old Dr's place. It's one of the first sites that I ever hunted. Some of you may remember it. My best coin so far was found there.....

Out on the back forty there is an old homesite that we were wanting to locate. After an hour or so scanning where we thought it might be, we sat down and studied the map a bit more. Decided that the place we needed to be was in a spot that we didn't want to get into at the moment, so we headed back up to the old house. Darkness was quickly coming in, so we only had a few minutes to spend there. First dig was a button looking item that has what looks like D A D and then two stars on the side and what looks like J R...or maybe even U R? on the bottom side. Next dig was a lead square? ??? Wiped it off and noticed some little marks on it. A die! I hollered over to Lisa and told her that I thought I had found a gaming die. But it's lead? Who would make a lead gaming die? And it's so tiny! ??? Well. Neat find, I thought, but nothing special about it. Packed up and left for the house. Got home, mentioned the die to Charlie and while I'm cooking dinner, he does a bit of googling for lead dice. He found a site that said sometimes soldiers from the CW would make them out of bullets and sit around in down time and play. I thought, wow! Maybe I do have a keeper here! My next thought was to mail a couple of my friends on here that I knew were knowledgeable on CW era items and see what their thoughts were on it. BuckleBoy answered with a reply that I was thrilled to read! A 'YES they did' reply! ;D Thanks so much for taking the time, Will! :)

Here's pics of the die and the other finds from the day...

Thanks so much, ya'll! :)

Thanks Ck, Bbay, hog, Romeo, and (WSDaddy :D ).

Plah...I dunno? :-\

Thanks CDancer, Swinger and Mike!! :)

Vol...True, true..nothing like having your Momma mad at ya! :D It's really weird how at times the color of dug lead here is a dull gray and right over the hill they can be white? Those two round bullets were dug in the woods not a half a mile away and the 'newer' white bullet was dug in the field behind the house? :icon_scratch: Thanks! :)

Thanks Mike! :)

Thanks Golden and Seger! :)

Uh OH, Doug! What has WSDaddy told you? :D Thanks!

Rob...I can't! But gotta get over there with a mower soon! :-X Thanks!

Civil!! Thank you sooo much for that picture and info! There's hardly anything on them on the internet! :-\ May I ask what book that came from? You know, Christmas is nearing and I may have to have that one! ;D

Thanks, Evy! I'm sure it was a pretty one in the day. Sadly it's so far gone now that everytime I go there, I expect to see that it has fallen. :'(

Thanks, KD, MM the jokester, ME, Dman and KD! :)

Thanks, Leon! Yep, we have a great bunch of helpful folks here!

Thanks again ya'll! You're the best! :)

Nana

That is an absolutely fantastic find, Nans. This really has to be one of my favorite Tnet finds.

Congrats! :icon_sunny:

One cool relic, Nana! Very nice. Great story and pics too. :icon_queen:

Keep digging!

You always seem to find the neatest things. Do you often stop and think about things you find? Bet many a CW soldier had a good time sitting around the fire throwing dice...just to pass the time away.

 RR

Pretty cool. 8) The die is neat. First I have seen. Always better than coinage.

We got some decent snow up here. I did hear it was in the twentys last week in Alabama (from our Huntsville friends). I hope this snow doesn't last...

Nice digs Nana! Love the die (dice is plural)-so you might go back and see if you can find the other one. It may be nearby.

Thats the first lead dice I've ever seen.Congratulations.Now I'll be thinking about gambling all week.

Wow!
how cool is that 8) ??? ;D
I love the history of this hobby.
Wonder what stories that die could tell!?

Congrats

Thanks Lisa and Anne! :)

RR..I do usually. But not when I found this one. :P Just thought it was very curious to have a die made of lead? :D That is, until Charlie mentioned lead bullets and CW in the same sentence! Then I had to start wondering and asking! :D
I've not found any other CW item at this site. Just the 1827 dime and those old bottles I posted a while back. A lot of the CW items I've found came from a farm that's just around the bend, so that's why I gave it a second thought when it was mentioned. There's a lot of cleaning up to do at this site if we want to hunt it. It's on the edge of a hay field that gets cut usually twice a year, but the weeds and grass right around the house never gets cut. Guess Lisa and I are going to have to drag the mower over next time and get busy! :D

Thanks Bob! And yes, it's been down right cold around here. :-X We usually have great weather in November. ???

Will do Stoney! Thanks!

Aww! Thanks, DD! :) But there are many other finds posted here that are more deserving. :)

No, no, Plah! I understood! :) But I just don't know. There's not a lot of information on them. :-\ I was thrilled when Civil posted that picture of them here. Thanks! :-*

Stay away from the casino, Rog! :D

Thanks Ashleen, Reno, Cru and Allen!! :)

Nana

Finding something made by a soldier, I think is one of the best Civil War relics out there.
