Hey guys any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I've tried for hours online but can't find anything....

Bowl appears to be very old and has a nice patina.....Has detailed Celtic rope design around the edge and has a hallmark which I'm unable to identify (Triangle with 3 point star and O C above).... See picture

Weighs 1lb. 6oz.
Measures: 2.5" tall and 6 3/4" wide

Looks a little rough is some places but overall good shape.

Any ideas on age/maker?

If anyone has a subscription to one of those hallmark lookup sites and can look it up for me that would be awesome.

I actually found it at this little hole-in-the-wall thrift shop for $1.25. I've found lots of treasures there and they always surprise me..... I almost missed it mixed in with all the other misc pots/pans and cookware....

Hopefully someone will know what it is...

Heh... Don't ya just LOVE the thrifts. I use to go to way more than I do these days... because of the lack of scoring like I use to ... DUE to the MANY "others" that are sleezing through em and scamming / screening items BEFORE they are put out and such ... now not all thrifts have this going on... I only hit the ones that "they don't really check" stuff.
but have found incredible items as well many times in the 25+ years been hunting them.

OH... BTW... I wanted to state that in my opinion from the patina ... I would bet it is most definitely bronze.

A 17th century Chinese artifact called the "Magnolia and Prunus" libation cup recently sold for $75,000 at Sotheby's. The piece was purchased from a thrift store in Sydney for $4.... now here is the kicker... the Auction Estimate was 20-30,000. heh
Not bad for 4 bucks

Yeah, I LOVE hunting them. Growing up my uncle was an antique dealer and used to babysit me while my parents were at work and we went hundreds of thrift shops/antique stores over the span of 5-10 years….Im glad I was exposed to this at such an early age and the "ADDICTION" is in my blood. Almost everything at my house is second hand including my Picasso Lithograph. ;)

That would be sweet……Hopefully someone knows something about it. I think that Christies does free appraisals if its worth over $10k.

I wonder if the hallmark represents the trinity.Maybe something from a church to hold Holy Water.

Looks like an ashtray to me. I recall my folks had a bronze ash tray that was Chinese, looked a lot like this one, except I think instead of the rope there were Chinese characters.

Yeah I thought that at first... But there's no rest for the butts... If it turns out to be an ash tray I'll still keep it.

The hallmark has me intrigued... Been looking up old celtic symbols... so far I think that I figured out that the triangle=fire... Still working on the rest.

Either way I've learned a lot about bronze that I didn't know before.

i think "ancient" in this case is a relative term.....

Yes... I believe this piece to MORE LIKELY than not.... "ancient" which ...
an·cient1/ˈān(t)SHənt/adjective
adjective: ancient
1.belonging to the very distant past and no longer in existence.
"the ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean"
synonyms: of long ago, early, prehistoric, primeval, primordial, primitive.

I'm with unclemac here, I do not believe the bowl is ancient at all, but a modern, less than 50 year old bowl, and I believe it is brass not bronze. The ancients did not utilize hallmarks, for one thing, and celtic designs are used by many companies to this day.

The Ancients ? who are "they"? where they a tribe heh ... Medieval is ancient... 300 years ago was ancient... and yes "hallmarks" and "marks" have been used since makers been making.
The thing is... It may be just a copy .. BUT that style, the design, material color ETC is exact... as far as mark... that will POSSIBLY be the key to unlocking the riddle here.
And still in my opinion warrants further investigation... should not be dismissed.

When you have handled and seen as much "ancient" stuff as I have over the years you tend to get "the eye" for it... BUT... still can be good copy.
