Just got a new to me used Barracuda. Original nicads are long gone and have been replaced with an 8 AA rechargeables holder with a 9 volt connector. I've been told this detector was designed to run on 8 volts and presently runs around 12 volts. My question is if this is safe to do or do I risk frying the unit? Should I try to run a 6 AA holder at 9 volts roughly. I tried it out as it is last Sunday and it performed well. Thanks in advance for your help.HH

12V should be just fine. The ICs typically utilized in newer digital detectors (most electronics, actually) usually operate from 5-12V (which is why your 7.2V "9V rechargeable" works in most 9V devices.) The transistors alone typically can handle upwards of 40-60V.
