That’s a hell of a week/month/year, much less a day. Looks to be mostly csa.

Pardon my ignorance, the holes in the round balls….assuming not fishing weights, based on where found, but that many pulled?

Lol thanks buddy. They're pulled. I found a bunch years ago at this spot. These are from 20+ years ago. Yes it's a Confederate camp. My guess it they camped over night & knew that they were going to battle. It's 1st corps ANV.

Makes sense, don’t see any fired

Can’t see the end of the Gardners, but were they pulled too, or just drops?

Check this Gardner out. He loaded it backwards & looks like he had a helleva time getting it out. This is from this camp. It's close to town buddy. They knew they were heading for the shit. The sound ball looked tough to get out also. I bet they bitched. Lol

Agreed, assuming loaded backwards.

The only conical ball that's pulled is a three ringer. None of the gardners are.

Odd that only round balls were pulled, unless they got a shipment of Gardners in that day. Also odd that number of round balls….i thought/assumed by that point in the war round balls weren’t as common.

I hunt the Gettysburg campaign. They used what ever was still available. Both sides still had many .69" smooth bore muskets in use. Every division in every corpse in both armies had smooth bore muskets in use in July of 1863. If you ever get a chance Read Aim Fire! Small arms ammunition in the battle of Gettysburg. It has in it who carried what. The Reb army carried everything it had with them ftom Virginia. If they did get new stuff it was off of captured Yankees.

AWESOME !

You never cease to amaze me ( esp for 2024 Civil War Digs ) ; lovin the Gardners as usual , I sure you recall I said they are not abundant here in N ATL but I have a handful of nice dropped ones from certain sites around 'The Battle of Peachtree Creek ' .

Guess those little buggers were deep & missed by older machines ? I wonder if their weight made them go deeper over the decades than say lighter buttons ?

Great Job & have a blessed & wonderful Fall - Holydays -Winter.

Davers DJ in N GA .

Kind of a dark read.
Just lightened it up some.

I’m going to ask a novice question, but…..the book you reference is likely fantastic for that one particular battle (or 6 months before/after), is there a book(s) which show the progression of weapons, by regiment/group, throughout the war? I hunt a lot of small, off the beaten path sites, and with a few buttons or bullets, would love to be able to closer Id “who” was there. Probably a stretch, but thought I’d ask anyway.
