An old button?

Hello all. Brand new to metal detecting about 2 weeks. Its addictive...very addictive. I have found some interesting things so far, like a 1850's cow bell intact with the clapper. Today I found a round button with a weird shank. I will try to post some pictures. It has usf printed on the shank. It appears to be bronze. Thanks for any info.

It's a snap button, so guessing 1890s as the earliest date.

I agree with the previous snap comment. Are you sure it’s brass? In the second pic I think I can see rust. Does it stick to a magnet? Not certain on age, but comfortable to say it’s fairly modern.

Yes, it’s a snap fastener, originally used on things like buggy and automobile canopies, motoring and motorcycle gauntlets and then workwear in general. The ‘U.S.F.’ is for the United States Fastener Company of Boston, Massachusetts. Can’t find a reliable date for when the company was formed, but some sources suggest it was around 1915.

They ceased to exist in 1928 when they merged with the Carr Fastener Company (originally of Cambridge, Massachusetts) to form the United-Carr Fastener Company.
