I volunteered with an archaeological organization yesterday out here in West Texas. We went to a site where three shoulder scales had been found in 2016 way up on the slope of a big hill it really made no sense for military artifacts to be up there but a few other bits and pieces of metal suggested that the artifacts were most likely lost/discarded by Indians. My apologies as I do not have photos of the shoulder scales.

The view from atop was spectacular. I was able to see up and down two different drainages for many miles.

We mostly found cut nails but there were a few other interesting items…. The only items we are completely unsure about are the two small rusty cylinders left of center and the brass piece (see photos) directly below the cylinders. If anyone recognizes these, please let me know.

I am not in possession of these artifacts so these are the best photos I have at this time.

Not the shiniest finds but they still tell a story, a story we are trying to unravel. Thanks for viewing.

Nice finds! The 2 PCs on the left are parts of binoculars like these, which makes sense seeing it was an outlook site.

Not sure of the other item but perhaps it was looked at with some interest as to me it resembles the Thunderbird but l may be overthinking it.

Thank you. That’s funny you said it resembled a Thunderbird. I was the one that actually found that piece and when I first saw it, I thought it resembled that as well. I don’t expect to find the answers to these pieces but I was hoping someone may recognize them.

great saves, great post

Nice post thanks for sharing :)

It looks a lot like a piece of a harmonica Reed except the edges on the side look intentionally shaped and the slots are kind of doubled up. Maybe a Reed for something else?

I agree that at first glance it does look like a harmonica reed. It is a little thick for the harmonica reeds that I’ve seen but perhaps a reed to something else might be right.

Great finds! Unfortunately the Thunderbird has yet to ever be verified with any old Indian culture. It is a more modern emblem .But it does look like one.
