If you shine the light onto the symbols or shapes you want to bring out, you should be able to see the improvement with your unaided eyes and the camera should be able to snap it's picture. A real quick test of your camera is to turn it on, turn on the monitor screen, point your T.V. remote control at the lens and press any button on the remote. If you see the IR emitters of the remote light up like car headlights, then your camera can take IR.
As a side note, that is the way many folks find UFOs showing up in their photos of landscapes, clouds, city scapes, etc. We believe many of the UFOs use some type of IR emitters that wraps the visible light around themselves to keep hidden from view.
