Got out today to the farm field since the corn stubble has been knocked down for the past week. Once again, I waved to the tractor operator as he drove by this morning to mow down the next field. Dug a few trash targets and then got a 79-81 signal, shallow. Flipped out the plug and found that the object was in the plug. Broke away a little soil to reveal a dark disk. Coin or flat button? Turned out to be a coin. As you'll see from the picture composite and the video, it is a 1787 Connecticut copper. Prior to this one, my only other minted post-colonial was a Vermont copper, also 1787.
This coin is approx. 28mm in diameter and weighs 6.78 grams or 104.6 grains.

Thanks for watching!

Wow that coin made it a long way from home! The off strike is quite dramatic and rEally amazing condition. Are you hunting outside Bmore? Permission or opportunity? I looked up the owner of some farmland last weekend and went by his office and asked permission. He seemed surprised I was even asking. He said he had seen some guys recently near a site I had worked recently. I didn't get to ask but was curious if the guys he saw were on some of the land he tends or nearby. The site was a bust but its great to know there are still generous people who are willing to share the land with us.

Thx Scrappy! The patina in the pic turned out to be a bit different that reality. There certainly is enough surface relief that both sides light up when you shine a small light at the side of the coin.

Thx danjsargent! Agreed! I was scratching my head at the detail; never thought it would happen.

Thx Z.K. Both sides have off-strike but it looks more pronounced to me on the obverse.

Thx pa-dirt! Seem to be an area with a number of square nails. Also found a brass animal bell with the iron striker still inside.

Thx Tommybuckets! Yes, hunting in Baltimore County. Gentleman who works this park told me today he's happy to have me detect there but asked me to stay out of the waterways on the property.

Thx Stretch! Yes, sir. I've never had a year like this.

Congratulations on the nice old copper find! :occasion14:

Exceptionally nice coin. Congrats on a nice find.

Best of luck to you sir!

Congrats on a really nice copper. I hope you can get out there again to see what else in the farm field.

Sweet old copper, Comgrats!!

I believe this coin would ID as ....M33.37-z.9 "CONNFC" Very Scarce. Someone may weigh in. Eyes were going "buggy". Although date more resembles reverse in M.33.6-kk. I know I'm close.

Thx hogge! I just posted a better resolved image. I was surprised at all the variants that exist for these coins.

Thx Jamie. I spoke yesterday with a supervisor there and he said had no problem with me detecting there but to stay out of the waterways that are on the west side of the property. Up to that conversation I had not asked permission from anyone at the site, though I had conversations with a number of people who work at the site.

Thx deershed! Haven't found my deer shed yet, though I haven't been in the woods for several weeks.
