Re: Amber Thingy ??

Any way to show size and dimensions??

Can you figure out how hard it is?
(on a mohs scale 1-10)
Your fingernail is a 3
Glass being a hardness of 5
Quartz is a 6-7
Diamond is a 10

What do you think it is ??

Re: Amber Thingy ??

Do you think maybe you have a piece of amber??
Take it to the Geo department of the coledge and see if you can get a positive ID.
If it is, a chunk that big is a very valuable thing.

Re: Amber Thingy ??

That is an amazing piece. Is it amber? Could be. I know pretty much nothing about amber.

However, the texture on the outside makes me think it could be from a piece of agatized wood. Maybe fire agate.

That's a nice rock, AA!

You could go to web minerals or maybe local library...

Library has National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals.

Awesome book!

Amber is really soft on the Mohs scale...
Perhaps that is what you have???

Re: Amber Thingy ??

A question, AA...

Will it become sticky if wetted with alchohol, gasoline, or acetone?

That would be a sign of non-fossilized amber..

Re: Amber Thingy ??

Heat up a needle with a lighter then stick it in the thingy, If its amber or pine resin you will smell pine. if its plastic it will stink like burned plastic. Amber is fossilied resin so though not hard it is solid, not soft. If you can bend it or stick something into it it is most probibly a lump of resin. Possibly frankinsence a gum resin used in incence. It used to be common for ladies to carry some with their hankies.

Re: Amber Thingy ??

If it is pine resin,
pry off a little of an edge and put it on a plate and heat it up.
It will melt like wax, and smell very strongly of pine.

OMG! It was yellow opal and now you've ruined it. ROFL, I don't know what it is, but it's probably agate like Eu_Citizen said because the man knows his rocks.
The only Opal i know of is a Buick... :D

Take the thing to a rock and mineral shop,
Or the local college and see if the professors can help you with the ID.
For heavens sake Buddy, don't destroy it in frustration.
If it is amber you have done the easy tests.
Now go confirm it .
Keep the pieces so they won't have to break anymore off.
Let them see the big one but let them work with the bits and pieces.
