That's pretty! Can you give us a little more info? Perhaps the box and cloth? That could help with possible age. How deep? What else did you find close by?

Can you also put up a reverse pic ? thanks !

just saw the link put up by doc. beav. -- gold wash over base metal - fun find anyway !

I bet you found a geo cache. Was there a note with it or anything? Fun find.

Sure makes the heart go pitter patter when ya dig something up like that!
The closest I've come to that was last month finding a necklass and pendant, VERY HEAVY in hand. Both items stamped 18K, had the spanish word for gold on it.
Then I tested it to see if it was real.
My best find of the year was a FAKE!
Still, made my heart go pitter patter!

i`ll only take one if you wrap it in plastic, put it inside a clothe and then bury it in a tin can in my backyard!

This is an extraordinary find for sure considering:

The stunning 1877 $50 Half Union gold coin is the largest gold coin ever struck by the U.S. Government, weighing over 2.5 oz of .900 pure gold.

Only two were ever struck. Now they’re in the Smithsonian Institution collection as two of the most valuable coins in the world. Few have ever experienced their dazzling design or massive size first-hand.

I think we all know its a copy, you can tell right away from the 24k plate finish.... I hate these coins and those commercials people buy them from.... Really taking advantage of the novice collector... Send it back to the mint and tell them you want your money back... Cool find if you dug it though, would make a fun addition to any collection. Since most people can't afford to collect a real one they make these.... As for an investment, you can not liquidate your money back on it ever..
Keep @ it and HH !!

I can just see Ric Savage stumbling around Levittown right now saying "What the hell? I know the crew buried this episode's finds somewhere around here...it was going to be a huuuge 'boom baby' moment...a giant gold coin!"...

Everyone could be using American Diggers to their advantage. Use it to convince your wife to support your hobby by letting her think you could possibly make that much money. She'll be begging you to go detecting lol.

Yeah. You hit that right on the head.
The BS tone on everyone's detectors just went off.

I found some just like this.... then I woke up.

Mine included.......

I'm guessing Geocaching....In way too perfect condition.

There is a great positive side to this story. The good news is that it is clad in real gold , so I would say your detector is correct. The other good news is that you had a great time finding it , and you will never forget that excitement.

That find some pretty cool stuff. I will have a pic of.tje back up here by.tomorrow for those who would still like to see the back, and as for the clotj.amd.tin questions it was an old tin roughly.from the 30s or 40s looked.like it was a small.cookie tin of some sort the coin pretty much just fit.in it it was pretty badly.rusted so i couldnt make out.the.decals or anything, and the cloth was an old tattered.white cloth looked.like maybe a handkerchief the had.turned a bit yellowish assuming from the tin corrosion, and i had gound it about 7 inches down.
