Found all these relics at a dump today. The Stork Club tin is very rare, it was for make up. The Stork club has a very interesting history and was for rich people in New York. My other interesting find is the brass piece my brother found which is a victorian clothes clasp. It could even be colonial. If anybody has info on the clasp I would appreciate it. I would also like to preserve my find for future generations and it is starting to rust on parts. How can I remove rust on small parts of the relic without destroying it? I spent about 3 hours digging these relics with my brother and will spend most of my summer digging all the remainder of relics out of the dump/metal detecting. I will keep you guys updated.

Really awesome finds! :occasion14:

Really nice finds, congrats!
I remember Bosco but I don't think mom ever bought any. :icon_scratch:

Just my two-cents on keeping rust at bay. Experiment with linseed oil on a piece of junk first and see what you think. Very nice recoveries by the way.

Thank you guys for the advice, feedback, and stories. I hope I can save more of these awesome artifacts before somebody bulldozes the dump which may happen in the summer.

Neat! If you search - you will find a hundred recommendations on removing rust (safely). Here are just a few to get you started...

[*]The BEST method for cleaning Iron Relics (Aug 18, 2010)
[*]How to Get Rust Off Of Small Iron Objects W/O Electrolosis? (Sep 22, 2010)
[*]Removing rust deposits from iron objects (Jun 14, 2005)

Thanks for these methods, I will look into all of them and will try them first on some similar iron items I have which aren't so old and if they work I will try them on my clasp.

I have heard that works and have been dying to try it! Thanks for the advice.

I'm not happy unless I'm down in the dumps! ... Some of the most fun I have ever had was digging in a shallow dump that dated from the 40's thru 60's.

Thats exactly what I have found, the cool part is some of the relics are 1800s and earlier that I find once in a while. I have found part of a vase dated 1835 and a few other victorian finds.

Back in the day they were called dumps. Today we in our hobby call them honey holes. Great finds and good luck through the summer hunting.

Thanks! My honey hole is still producing so hopefully it doesn't run dry anytime soon.
