Got out early this morning but not early enough. For 5 hours I tromped along following a fresh set of boot prints. I got bummed and started collecting pottery and extinct snail shells the Indian ate. I finally headed another 10 miles down stream. Guess what? Same tracks same guy. I swear he has my hunt down perfect.
The water dropped a lot after lunch and I found this worn out Adena?.

After that I found this out in the water.

About this time I could hear somebody try to crank a boat. I guess they cranked on that thing for 30 minutes.I was ready to go help the guy I had been tracking all day when his boat fired. He drove by me wide open at about 10 miles per hour if that. He just waved at me,lol. I was cracking up.
Went back up river and tried some new spots and did ok. It sure was muddy. That is my foot by a point

Here are my finds and brokes and study items.

Here is the pottery I collected and the now extinct snails. They used this type of fresh water snail as food and they also made garlands with them to cover their dead in burials.
The pottery is either stamped or incised and tempered with fresh water mussels or crushed lime stone in the local clay(mud). This pottery ranges from woodland to mississipian. The design was for texture cause it got slippery when greasy. The large stick incised piece is actually red but is still black from the fires.
Thank for lookin at my hunt.

Nice, you're kicking some ass! Any base or side grinding on that point by your muddy boot?
The base is broke about half way across @ an angle. Just a very small amount It is ground on the side towards the bottoms but sharp toward the top. I was thinking copena when I found it. Pretty sure. Its going to get better when all those collapsed banks flatten out and the mud is gone. Thanks thirty7. You had a good day also.

Nice finds TNMountains. Have you ever found any of those snail shells with holes drilled in them for suspension? We find those occasionally on our Ft Ancient sites with a hole drilled in the side and figure they may have been sown onto clothing as a Tinkler.

Yes they were strung and the very small ones were sewn in by the hundreds on a womans finest buckskin. Archeological reports that the were also strung in large garlans to adorn the deceased. We had so much fresh water items to use and they used them. The large mussel in its self was like a disposable paper plate. I am collecting some large bowls of then since they were eaten to extinction. The very large periwinkle style one is another that should be saved. Enjoyed your hunt the other day
Here is a strand similiar that adorned the dresses. Hope this helps ?

Exactly JYD I was to slow.!!

Thanks Mainer I see metal artifacts out of Maine all the time. After all the floods here it should just get better with a little wash on it.

Wow, good stuff TN. Love the materials of those tools. The snail shells are really cool too.

That's crazy on the other guy...I would have stopped to visit with ya if I'd have been him. Always nice to talk to the "competition".

You had a great day but I know you were negatively impacted by your competition. I hate it when I get to a field and find fresh footprints. I may find some artifacts but I keep thinking I wonder what he found.

You are right and I was trying to figure something out that would change my hunt. So I went after pottery and shells. I found a little ft ancient or Hamilton and was stoked cause he missed it. Being able to see where he looked helped me figure out where to look. He was looking up high against the banks so if the waters edge was clear I concentrated on just that and found that horse creek blank and a couple more triangles and also went to places I never go and found two good points. The water level dropping helped me as well. So yes he impacted my hunt but I tried to figure out ways to be successful anyways.(or at least find something). My attitude was like yay another one he missed. He made me hunt harder cause he knew the sites was smarter and beat me to the punch. :laughing7:

Hey TN, i noticed you said extinct. the shell you have strung up are called Olivial or something really close to that, are those the extinct ones? I find them at indian sites over here with the tips filed/cut off to be threaded. This is in the desert SW, do you know where they originate from?

Pumped up again.... Thanks alot....
Congrats good hunt... :headbang: :headbang: :hello2:

Nice hunt, too bad the competition didn't stop to speak. I'm sure the two of you could have shared some good knowledge.

Sometimes we are kinda far back in the boonies or away from civilization and down here you must approach another person slowly
showing no threat or keep a
little distance and visa versa when approaching.. even me. I am sure that must sound strange to you but thats kinda the way it is down here we tend to be a little overly cautious. You can never be sure what that other person is up to or doing. I could tell some stories but am sure this is not the place for that. I used to hunt with a beautiful girl and it kept me on double alert for her safety. I am sure the fellow hunter was a nice guy but he was not interested in conversation :laughing7:
I am sure though this is much safer than many city's and parks even though it seemed everyone was out shooting on such a pretty day. :icon_sunny: Pretty common.

TN, the ones you have threaded on the wire, do you know where they originated from? are they salt or freshwater?
