Re: Acid date Buffalo's

I do and it's harder to complete a lifted set than most folks think. The third page is tough to find slicks. The first two pages are considerably easier to find. Still looking for a 1916/16 double die. siegfried schlagrule

This will not work on silver coins as the silver does not react to the acid.

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

I have been messing around with raising the dates on buffalo nickles,I have been buying them from the dealer in town without dates. Most of the time now he lets me pick threw them for the ones with mint-marks.I have paid anywhere from 7 cents to 17 cents a piece.I have found from 1913 Type I to 1925 P-D-S.I would like to know if there is any value for the 1913-S Type II that has been treated.
No matter what I think this is a lot of fun.

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

Check the completed listings on ebay to see what they bring. search for lifted date or acid date. siegfried schlagrule

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

Could anyone post begfore/after pics, to give us an idea how much improvement? If its worth the effort, I have dozens of no-dates.........fred

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

Never heard of that. How can you bring back the date on a coin that worn out?? Seems like that would be impossible ???

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

Yep, it will make visible the dates on all but the most worn nickels. I will occasionally pick up a $20 bag of no-dates from my dealer and just put a drop on them and see what happens. Pretty cool.. Good luck,, Gpurs...

True silver is pretty resistant for acids.. BUT silver oxide isn't as resistant so a weak acid will work just perfectly for silver.

crazyjarhead I don't think he means worn out coins, only worn so without cleaning he can't see the date. :tongue3:

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

How long generally do you have to leave the acid on to get a good date showing?

Happy Hunting!

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

Enamel.. That depends on the coin condition, alloy... So you'd have to look at it every now and then just to be sure.

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

But more than a couple of minutes, right?

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

Yes most certainly, I do mostly check every 5 to 10 min.. Depending on my mood and curiosity.

Copper and silver can be left in for quite a while without any greater damage to it if your using citric acid.

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

I found a 1913-s Type II, and a 1921-s a couple of weeks ago so all I need to fill the book are a 1913-d, 1926-s, and a 1931-s. Man this is alot of fun, you all should try it out! I have used the commercial acid, ketsup, hot sauce, and vinegar to bring back dates. I finally discovered a mix that works so well that I must keep the formula a secret. I'll have to try some lemon juice for some citric acid action.

Re: Acid date Buffalo's

You'll rarely find any slick bufalos from the thirties. You can buy AGs and tough them up with acid. Everyone will know what you did so they will always grade as POOR but where else can you complete the entire buffalo set for less than $100. siegfried schlagrule
