There is a battery indicator on the display screen. I am still using the batteries that came in it from the factory and I have probably 50 hours or better. When its time for new batteries I will use rechargeables.

according to garrett you get between 20and 40 hours of battery life depending on battery type used. alkaline batteries will outlast rechargables. i seem to get about 25 to 30 hours out of mine but i change batteries when they are down to about 1/2 to 3/4 life left. i use alkaline batteries in mine.

Batteries seem to last so long that I just put up a supply and pop 4 new ones in when I need them! JIM

I change mine when I lose first bar on battery meter, only 4 AA, and I don't use rechargeable, only Alkaline.

I got at least 25 hours and the battery indicator was still half full b4 I switched over to the new mAh rechargeables I bought...

I use Eveready NiMh in my 250, I have lots of hours on mine and I only take them out to charge when I have only one bar left.......I don't lose depth, sensitivity or anything!
I like the NiMh because it supposedly doesn't develop a memory like NiCd does so whenever they require charging I charge em!.they're ready overnight!

& the new ones last longer and charge in 15 minutes... woohoo! ;D

the ones they sent w/my ace from kellyco were dead - but i did not complain - my times worth more than that and have changed once since then - when they get just a smidge down that indicator shows it - i have also read and experienced the wierdness that happens with the det. at that time - so i change them - when i bring them home they show great on the battery meter -
BIG BUT ! thats under a no load situation - like when your car battery goes dead - i toss them in the battery box and use them later for small flashlights - yah i am cheap - sorry FRUGAL - it probably matters if u use the speaker , pinpoint allot , etc .............. LBP
