Is it wood , ivory , stone, metal ? It appears to be Chinese ,or Japanese - where did you find it ?

It is almost like a really hard ceramic. When you tap on it that's what it sounds like. Definitely not wood or metal. Found it on the coast after Katrina.

Looks like an Asian belt hook.

It's a Chinese ceremonial scepter or wand. The proper name is a Ruyi. I've handled a lot of the older and more valuable ones and your example is not jade, valuable nor old.

The one you show in your post is a tourist piece or a party favor. It appears to be made of bone but more than likely it's resin. To see if that's the case heat a pin to red hot and touch it to an inconspicuous spot on the piece. It will probably melt a little and smell like burning plastic.

I see the resemblance to the sceptre but I see none online with the knob on the back like mine as if it was to attach to something.

Found some belt hooks that look very similar to it and have same features. Thank you all for the help

It's a hook to hang up recalcitrant teenagers. :laughing7: please forgive the humor, thanks.

The "knob" is a common feature but not always included. It's often used to attach cord or fancy ribbons.
