I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers cause I've read this post before and it still puzzles me why we need to "walk on eggshells" when giving our opinions as long as they are not met to discriminate the poster and are met to inform .
The poster has to expect this from time to time and it shouldn't cause the members who reply to worry about what they said because the question was asked by the member who posted it . Sometimes it might NOT be what they want to hear but it needs to be addressed anyways . I'd rather hear everyone's opinions good or bad then have them do a "dance" around the facts .
Whenever I reply to a post I try to be honest and factual and even if it's not what the poster wants to hear they need to get all the facts as long as it's respectful and factual . I guess what I should say is if you ask for opinions then you should be ready to hear the facts .. good or bad ... after all , you asked ....
Please don't get me wrong and please if you read this and have something to ad that follows or maybe helps then ad to the thread cause I only want to "vent" the problems I see with the question "Real or Fake" ... that's all ..e'nuff said ... Woodstock

I get people trying to sell me fake stuff a-lot (since I do lot of trading and selling) woman last week wanted to sell me a two piece CS buckle for $900 telling me her husband dug it up many years ago. I took the buckle to two well known dealers in the Fredericksburg area and both told me it was fake almost as if it was sitting in kitty litter and bad dirt for awhile! Always do your home-work when you pull out your pocket book! I have been conned before and it is not good feeling. Thanks to the internet and treasure-net I can rely on more knowledgeable information and save my ass.

Real, or fake? 8-)

Terry, the pic has been Photoshopped to hellanback, so until I can also make
a hands-on inspection of the ...ummmm.....items in question, it is simply not
possible to make an accurate determination as to their being factory installed
or aftermarket add-ons.

Lacking that evidence, and based only on life experience, I would submit that the left pair
are natural, and the pair on the right subject have been modified. I would also predict that
the subject carrying those will some day grow the "counter-balance" to go with them, and
furthermore her back will be causing her problems in about 20 years, which will be about the
same time she decides she loathes the changes she made so long ago. But, by then she'll
have married very well, and hubby would be happy to pay for the "new her".

Complete conjecture, of course, but quite plausible.

Sorry, I had eggs for breakfast and dumped the shells on the kitchen floor....

for the sake of this discussion I need to make this perfectly clear ... Yes , you have the right to do whatever pleases's you ... that's fine with me . Now here's my point that you seem to not see . By answering a post asking for verification of ANY kind I'm NOT attacking , provoking , insulting , or deliberately offending ANYONE , period . I'm simply using applied knowledge to help answer a question that was publicly posted , period . Now if I deliberately answer the member with the INTENT of Attacking , Provoking , Insulting or Offending then I broke your rules . Your talking about a VERY thin line when I can clearly understand your rules and you understand them differently . Simply put again , I would NEVER just do anything your rules say to another member BUT I will answer them to the best of my knowledge to HELP the member in their quest for the truth and that's all I will ever do . I know that this is a touchy subject but it still bewilders me how to answer anyone's inquiry's . Cause if being humble and telling them I question the authenticity of whatever object is shown in the posted picture what and how are we able to answer them at all ? Lie ?Let it be know to you and all our fine members that I understand the rules of the forum and will never answer "out of line" to anyone . It just puts a collar on giving a "Honest Answer" for fear of being accused of breaking the rules . I also think it a good subject to bring up now and then so we all know where we stand . I will remain puzzled on how to honestly answering a post , being honest about my gut feeling's without offending the poster ... Thanks to you and all the other mod's and member's here at TreasureNet and Happy Trails to All ! Woodstock

Woodstock, I think you maybe missing the point, what Treasure Hunter is pointing out about the rules, is that if someone posts a find others shouldn't question if the OP found the item or not without proof of them faking the finding said item, what you seem to be referring too is if someone ask a question concerning what they have found, in this case IMHO all opinions would be OK concerning if the item is "real" or "fake/counterfeit".

Treasure Hunter please correct me if I'm wrong.

In nearly every part of life these day's ,One is forced to" walk on eggshells" be it MOST of my family members or even in public where every word spoken can be taken as offensive or racist etc.. IMO people are too thin skinned due to the wussafacation of America.

Nail on the head!

AU Seeker , I understand what your saying and that is not how this is worded . And I have seen things posted I felt where to good to be true and I might say something like " looks like it was never in the dirt " . Or in the case of find's posted that were " not dug " from various types of treasure hunting and they ask what our opinions on it . And if I believe it's a reproduction and I will include the reason's " why " I believe it's a repo . Now if they don't like my opinion's they fire up a " Moderator " and toss me in the fire , that is to me where it needs clarification . If not it shouldn't have been posted in the closed thread " Real or Fake " and it should say " Real Posts or Fake Posts " . I've never read a publicly read post here where someone downright said " your a Liar " and even if I thought it I'd never post it . It's IYHO that this is what is met and IYHO that's it's OK to tell the poster you believe it's fake or not original but that's what you think is permissible but you did not write the rules so you can't say for sure and neither can I and that is what I was talking about .
It's apparent that we might have read this differently and therefore understand it differently as well . It seams we both define the word " fake " the same as " counterfeit " or " reproduction " with the only difference being the last two are accepted as better language even though they mean the same thing . I really need no more clarification than how it's explained to me by Treasure_Hunter . And the ball can be handed in either direction the way it was organically posted the way I see it.
And apparently other member feel the same way I do so there must be a lot of other that understand what I met cause they read it as well .
I never met this to become the thread it has become but I'm glad to see it has . It's good to know what lines we can and can't cross and this still in need of clarification and might not ever be so I'll be happy here in the " Gray Area " . Happy Trails , Woodstock

A big part of the problem is many who detect wear rose colored glasses when it comes to their finds and they just don't seem to be able to keep an open mind. Then they will get offended, but why is that? I think it's because deep down they also have the same type of doubt but don't want to go there because it will ruin a good find. What's even worst than those people are the ones who will defend to no end, even if they find out the truth in person from someone they consider an expert, they'll never post the result. I honestly don't get these personality types because what's the sense of cheating yourself. The first thing I do when I find something that I think could be a good find is try to prove it otherwise.

Outstanding synopsis IP

As a reputable site, T-net should WANT it's users to call out obvious fakes/attempts at deception. Many people come to this site for research but what good is the site if everyone has to say "nice find" and "way to go"???? A novice could come here, see something with that and take it as gospel, now putting them on the edge of being a fool as well.
There is a major difference between "you didn't dig that" and "man that doesn't even look like it was in the ground, give us the story". If those things can't be separated by moderation, then you can remove my acct please. Too much mamby pamby bull-poop in the world these days, don't bring it here too. When I see an item I want and DESERVE to hear the truth from the experts(supported by fact), not from joe-blow who is just here to get himself a banner. There are many ways to tactfully call out an obvious deceitful post and when 100% sure, members should be encourage to keep up the integrity of our sport by stating the facts. End of my rant

This had already been answered. Our rules are clear and posted....

There are no attacks allowed on members. Someone's gut feeling something isn't real isn't proof, if someone is suspicious about a find or post pm or report it to mod and let mods look into it, don't attack the member..

Then clean your kitchen ... I know it's easy to use that term as a joke or a pun . I should have figured someone would . In the future I will "Talk softly and carry a BIG STICK !! Of coarse it'll have a coil on the end .. LoL! Woodstock

Showing that you doubt the veracity of someones recovery is accomplished discretely by
replying ':dontknow:' 'Huh' or similar.
Having been the recipient of such a response I would rather have had the member allowed
to openly voice his opinions and reasoning for further discussion.
One members questions concerning anothers purtported find is not necessarily an 'attack',
and we should be able to discuss this between us without the recommended action of
'passing a note to the teacher' :laughing7:
And yes, I know the rules are clear and posted. HH All
