Recondigger, its about 3" long. It reminds me of the thing that goes around a key hole. She was really pumped cause it was her first try at it.

looks like part of the locking closure on an old trunk

Welcome to the forum and kudos on your daughter making her first find. I hope it is the beginning of many more!

Most keyhole escutcheons plates are basically flat. I'm sure there are some that have a recessed areas. Many escutcheons are made out of brass. Does your find attract a magnet?

Because of the recessed area, your daughter's find looks like the lock plate area to a vintage steamer trunk. The circular lock would have fit in the center.

Neat find :)

Breezie, yes, it is brass. It is cleaning up nicely. I think she us getting hooked. My wife and I got her grandmother (my mom) hooked as well. In fact today was my mothers 71st birthday, and her gift from us was a metal detector, because every time we visited, her first question to us was "did you bring your AT Pro?" We were outside teaching her how to use her metal detector and my daughter decided to give it a whirl. Her eyes lit up when we dug it up.
