Hello Fellow T-Neters, Iv'e been chating with my Dad and he mentioned the house where he grew up. I really have no recollection of the house other than the pool in the back yard. I was about 3. Any how, He had stopped there about 30 years ago (on a trip east) and the woman who had bought it was a neighborhood friend of his and still lived there! She had invited him in and showed him around, recollecting there childhood. A touching story that got me thinking!
I asked my Dad for more info and he told me her name is Marylin and the approximate house location.... Let the research begin! Straight to a box of photos handed down for generations and found this dated 1960! The pine, my Grandfather planted, towers over the house today.
Further digging reveled a newspaper clipping of a promotion my grandfather received, it included his home address!!! Jackpot! I quickly printed off a 5x7 of the old house to take to the owner and was on my way.
Knocking on the door I asked the woman if she was Marylin. She said yes and I introduced myself. Wouldn't you know, as she heard my last name, A HUGE WELCOMING SMILE and an invite in. I presented her the photo and the stories began. From childhood to present. The hang out spots, the neighborhood changes.... WHAT A MARVELOUS WOMAN! After an hour of chat and meeting the family, she agreed to let me hunt without hesitation. I only had a couple hours at this point so I was quite selective in what I dug.
Clad everywhere! I dug about $8 in change even trying to avoid pennies! But shortly into it I pulled up a brass belt end monogrammed with an H for Harold, My Grandfather... I was just floored.... a 1952-D Rossie, could or not be from family. As I was running out of time.... (Drum Roll Please) A 1851 Braided Hair LC!!! This predates the 20's farm house by far! The condition is amazing! I was teasing my Dad telling him "you must have walked right over this 1000 times"!
This has been by far my most memorable day in Metal Detecting!
If I have learned anything in this life, it is not to hesitate. In photography, the shot is gone forever. The new job could be gone, and in Metal Detecting, your opportunity could be gone forever!
Marylin has terminal cancer in her 80's. I am SO HAPPY to have had the chance to meet her! LOL, She says "I'm OLD and have never seen a penny like that"! I have an open invite to stop back any time.... Oh, and the tips from the stories!
