several years ago a street was re done on the east side of mandan when it was discovered that the east portion of mandan was built on top of an old village site
it was extensively excavated and studied by the ND state historical dept
it was named 'scattered village'
here is a link to the study

NDDOT - Scattered Village Report

for those of you that have received some artifacts from me you can learn much about them by this read
it is divided into many sections and has many pictures and information and all the artifacts are exactly the same as what
Twitko and myself have shared with you by our posts and by gifting in the mail to our tnet friends
if you have received bone or flint, or pottery items from us you can find them by going to this site

Are these the same Mandans (as in the same region) that Lewis and Clark sintered with in 1805?

Or to be more precise. Is the town of Mandan anywhere near the Mandan village written about in the journals? That's for the link. It wants to down load the text which is okay so I'll need to check it out on my pc verses my wife's kindle.

I am not sure people realize the significance of that site and it's transition. Great history Stevie. I am always humbled when studying your culture and that so much survived. You are da man!!

Larson you sure come up with a ton of really good information thanks for the read boss !!!!!

Great link thanks. I haven't read it all yet, and this may seem like an off the wall type question, but has there been any DNA studies conducted on Mandan remains?

Thanks for taking the time to present this very interesting article.

Still curious if any of those artifacts are presented to the public for viewing

that motel you stayed at has fairly large display of
artifacts found in the scattered village dig
i will try to find you some pictures
as far as the rest of what was found i think it is any ones guess as to where the rest of the stuff ended up

WOW! Steve, you really went out of your way and got those pictures. Thank You!

I do have a couple of questions, did you see any of those ''plastic culture'' artifacts?

Folder #1 001.JPG

And the other question, what are these, and what were they used for?

IMG_0183.jpg

hey hey dennis
i still don't know what them polished plastic looking things are......and nobody else does either
in the last 25 years or so we found probably close to 3 dozen of them.....

most of those bone pieces are actually elk horn bracelets, necklaces, and ornaments....the one on the front left is a small wrist guard type of thing but most wrist guards were actually wider
elk horn lent itself to the bracelet making cuz it would spit into strips rather than having to take bone and cut it....the strips were boiled in buffalo fat which would make them curl

i think i have more pictures but i got tired of posting them.....i gotta figure out a quicker way to post them

Great link thanks. I haven't read it all yet, and this may seem like an off the wall type question, but has there been any DNA studies conducted on Mandan remains?

hey thanks, i don't know about any dna results but i have read a lot of things that said they have maybe some welchdna
as some of the mandans had blond hair and blue eyes, and light skin (not a joke)
also those round boats made of buffalo hide covering a wood frame are the same as the welch round boats

"The Mandans spoke Welsh, they used a boat which was know as the Welsh Coracle and many of the Mandans had blond hair and blue eyes."

here is an article about it: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bowen/mandans.html
