So this was found on a salt water beach. I was almost skunked today on a big sandy beach, so I did keep this black and brown encrusted object, perhaps because it sort of looked like a small coin. I soaked it and shook it up in baking soda and some black crust broke off and it looked shiny so I thought perhaps its silver. Maybe a dime? A pewter button? Can't seem to clean it much more.

The little silver lip has since started to tarnish again, only hours after being exposed.

Thanks. Yeah, the shiny lip completely tarnished over in room air. I tried the foil, soda and salt trick and it did nothing.

Some dueschbag convinced our gov. That millions can be made if we design our coins to not withstand Mother Nature, so instead of let's say 10 million dollars of coins lost each year now our govt just takes out that amount from the reserve each year for who knows what.

Maybe it is zinc because I guess pewter would likely be whiter and this is very black
