A TALE OF WOE

On march the 27th, my wife and I left on a trip to see relatives and more importantly, pick up my new Minelab metal detector :D that is now sitting at my step daughters just outside of Portland OR. We started from Prince George BC and went to Edmonton first to see my sister and her husband. He just bought a new seadoo that we had to see. My oldest daughter and her family lives there as well so we spent some time with them and took my grand daughter to Storyland Valley Zoo to see the elephants, tigers and monkeys. :D

Next we went to Unity SK to see my parents and check out house prices. You can buy a house for $20000 Cdn in the area. Would be a cheap place to retire to. From there we drove to the Montana border and started heading for Reno NV. Got as far as Wells NV and spent the night. The next day we headed off for Reno and our engine gave out halfway between Elko and Winnamucca near Battle Mountain on highway 80. Now this engine only has 90000 km on it. Thats about 56250 miles. It's a 2 ltr ford engine in a Ford Mystique, a twin to the Ford Contour. We had just had over $2500 spent on doing some things that it needed and some that it didn't. The turkeys that had it took over a week to figure out that the problem it was in for was a blown block heater line. The sad thing is that these guys are thought of as being good. Yah, good for nothing! They had shaved the head and put in all new seals on an engine that didn't need it and as a result shortened it's live to weeks from years.

Went to the Ford dealer in Winnimucca to see about getting the engine fixed. They only wanted $6300 Cdn. :( Hmmm. We got the brother in-law to come and get us  and the car with his truck and trailer. We found an engine with just over 20000 km on it for $1500 cdn.

Now the real sad part of this story is that I still don't have my Minelab! The wife is flying down in May to go and pick it up. I was hoping to go to Gold Hills OR to go to Accurate Locators Inc. so that I could have a peak at their GEMS and Future Series . Will have to wait for another time.

woe is you!

ray = a long time ago i would have told you - if you were pentecostle it wouldn't have happened to y0u. i'm much smarter now. the rain falls on the just and the unjust alike. you sound like one of the just one's. i'm also thankful that part of that car was made in canada so the old usa doesn't get all the blame. it is disturbing to hear that minelab is dragging its feet getting the new detector to you. everything has a way of turning around so i'll be watching for your picture in the california mining journal and the gpaa with the caption - man of the year! 100 oz of gold in two weeks time! wayne

Got Fisher metal detectors and drive Chevies, can't relate.....

Good luck and happy hunting!

Sorry to hear about your problems with the Minelab and car.

My last few vehicles have been Isuzu Troopers with a quarter-million miles on them, a Mitzu Montero with 200K, a 1979 Ford F100 4x4 with a cracked block and a broken odometer that got better gas than tire mileage, and my current jewel, a Toyota 4 Runner with 300 K miles on it I bought from an ex-lady-friend school librarian who never drove it more than 45 miles an hour and never took it off-road (I wouldn't swap it for a 2004 Explorer or much of anything else except a 1986 Mitzu Montero with a similar history).

Looking forward with Wayne to see you in the CMJ. Congrats on the Man of the Year Award we're rooting on you to get.

J

With a few new gold mines opening in the area, I know that I will not have any shortage of places to hunt. As to the problems with the car, I don't fault Ford. I question the morality of the people we trusted to work on it. Also the only reason that I don't yet have my Minelab is because I had it sent to the step-daughters hoping to do some detecting on the way home with it.

The one plus to having the unplanned engine problem was I got to spend some time in the relatively quiet town of Winnimucca NV where we were very well treated by everyone. The Ford dealer went out of their way for us more than once. The free drinks at the casinos didn't hurt either

Hey Ray
I saw an interesting post on the Side Scan Sonar Forum (The Tech Forum). It is titled Gems Accurate Locator March 18, 2004 by Yogizup. As I had never used this product, I have no opinion here.

Yes Ray most American casinos give free drinks to patrons while they are gambling. Gee, I wonder why?

I hope you eventually get your Minelab and may you get some detecting time here in the USA.

Good Luck
George

Re: A TALE OF WOE - Fords - my testimonial

Blew up a 1962 Mercedes, a 1976 chevette, a 1981 dodge Charger, a 1976 "lifetime" Cadillac Coupe de Ville and a 1995 Geo Metro. Have driven professionally in Fords to 600,000 miles. Personal Fords have all gone 250,000 unless totalled earlier. Present cars are a 1987 Ranger (closing in on 200,000), 1973 F-250 (that one was killed by flood and city demanded I get rid of it) (had 325,000), 1998 Taurus (nearing 200,000) and 2000 Taurus (almost 100,000). In earlier times I ran a 1968 Galaxie 500 and a 1969 Galaxie 500. Only really bad Ford I ever owned was a 1978 Pinto wagon. It kept running but I think I replaced every moving part at least twice and the expensive ones three times (crankshafts were being eaten like peppermint sticks). I'm no great mechanic. Only car I knew enough to do the work on was the 390 V8 in my 1968 Galaxie. Only "foriegn" car I ever owned in the US was that Dodge and it went to the boneyard after I went on a trip and someone came on our land and stole the driveshaft. After trying for three years to get one I finally could see why they would do that. Some punk couldn't afford a custom shaft so robbed us. I replaced that car before I gave up looking so there was no incentive to pay big money for a custom shaft. The Mercedes was owned when I was stationed in Germany. Exanimo, SS
