Went to an field that use to have a homested from the early 1800s
We had quite a day.
15 old coins and over 30 buttons in all between 3 of us.
the newest coin was an 1884 lg Can cent
the ones with little or no detail are from the 1700s

the field was a mud fest but we did not care.

Very COOL. 8) You did well. I also like your pic of the field - looks like a large area.

Here is a stupid question... why do people on farms loose coins? Do they have them in their pockets when plowing the fields??

Anyway. Nice finds.

Great digs, WTG!!!
That field looks like 50 I drive by all the time... ::) ??? maybe I should be checking them out...
Good luck, & Happy hunting~

The thing is, make sure their was a dwelling in the field in the past, and you will then turn up treasure.
This field had a dwelling that was torn down in the late 1800s. I located it using an old map from 1870
Once you find a site take a walk and look for shards of pottery and glass, then you can be sure of the location of the old homestead.

I think you can assume that some coins drop out of the pockets but the rest could have come from the yard or from the cellar hole that is now part of the field.

soak those colonial coppers in some olive oil for a few weeks. maybe some of that black crud will come off and you will be able to read some detail. at least enough to id and date them. awesome finds by the way!
