Easy test would be whether it is forged iron or rolled steel. Steel would be 19th century or later. So you have to prove it is iron. Have a VDI on your detector? Steel is more conductive than lead. Lead is more conductive than iron. Set your discrimination to reject lead and wave the sample. If it beeps, it's not iron.

Problem is that hammering iron and repeatedly reheating introduces carbon into it, which is how steel is made. Any of our European members have tips on detecting armor?

The rivets look mighty long, and the one appears to have a swaged tip (the one with the radiating "star" pattern. Does not look like 16th century work. The fact the rivets are intact, have a wide gap, and there is no connected piece would also indicate they were connected to leather or wood.

Very little armor is flat. The strength is all in the rolled curves and ribs worked into the pieces.

Compare your rivets to those on the pieces below.

Offhand, I'd say you have a piece of sheet metal.

Do you see any hammer marks on the larger piece? Or on the rivets? Why isn't it rusty?

It has the shape, size and configuration of a blinder from a (horse) harness headstall. They restricted the horse's vision and were used to let the horse see only what was ahead of them. It would have been covered with leather on both sides and attached to the rest of the headstall with rivets. Being metal, it would have kept it's shape better than one made out only of leather. Hope this helps.

I'd have to agree with the remains of horse blinders:

was MDing some desert flats today and hit on this. i was wondering if its a piece of armor. had three rivit holes and is about 2 mil thick. spanish were all over these parts looking for their cities of gold.

You didn't say anything about that Panamanian seal? Is it on the "breast plate", or separate?

Or, do you already know who Balboa was?

Furthermore, I believe that the item posted is a boxing crotch protection cup.

Sure Angelo. He's Vasco Nuñez de Balboa, (only his friends called him Rocky). I think he discovered the pacific ocean after defeating some russian guy, (or so the story goes), in a fisticuffs match of all things. ;)

lol, funny thing is i brought it over to my friend who was fishing a pond when i found it, he put it straight to his crotch and was like dude, i think it is armor. Functional, the spanish dude was found the other day MDing, with some old grenade fuses. it already had a hole drilled into it, so now i wear it on my chain, its kinda like my lil spanish treasure. no im not sure how the story goes
