here is the photo I promised of the 1762 spanish 1 reale, plus the 1777 half reale and the 1828 large cent I cleaned up with "CLR". this is now my prefered cleaning method on old copper coins.

wish I had taken a before photo of the 1828, happy hunting to all.

Thanks for sharing, very nice coins...

clr is made by jelmar it is in the cleaning supply area of grocery stores.
it cleans
"C" calcium deposits
"L" lime deposits
"R" rust deposits
comes in a grey bottle, I am surprised you've never seen their commercial on tv.

What I am seeing is mint luster removed. There was a superior rust/lime/
calcium cleaner on the market until the last couple years. It you can get
a plastic container of "The Works Rust Lime & Calcium Remover" you can
remove the gunk without losing the luster. Ingredients are Phosphoric Acid
and Glycolic Acid plus what they won't reveal. I only have one/forth bottle
left. Some old harware stores may have some left. I have tried to find it
online but was not succesful. A lot of guys use CLR but it's too harsh for me.
