… or at least what’s left of one. I dug this copper this past Sunday at an old homesite in the woods. It was in a poorly drained area near a small stream. It is a Massachusetts one cent coin minted in either 1787 or 1788. The state only made these coins for two years, as the cost to mint each coin was apparently greater than their face value. They also made a half cent coin with the same design. The brown color is corrosion and not dirt, so I think this is as good as it is going to get. You can still see the eagle/shield, but the date, most lettering, and the obverse are gone. Still interesting to me, even in this condition, and a super tough coin to find, at least for me anyway. Also found a spoon bowl, a round ball, and half a scissor. I will definitely be heading back soon; the elusive Pine Tree coin might be out there somewhere 😁. Happy hunting and good luck!

Congrats!

That is truly the quintessential Mass coin. Great find. Over the course of my detecting career, I've only found one MA copper...your specimen is in better shape! Congrats!
Thanks! These cents are a classic, but you found the holy grail of Mass coins with your banner find. Sorry your Mass cent was in rough shape too. Hopefully there are better ones out there for us somewhere.

Congrats. State coins never show up on my sites
Thanks. I have found several coppers from MA, CT, and NJ, but would trade them all along with just about everything else I have ever dug for that 1652 Pine Tree coin you found😁.

Awesome Find!!! Congrats!!! Banner!!

One of the Mass holy grail coins- Congrats! Been blessed enough to get the Pine Tree, but no Mass copper as yet.

Nice one Lenmac. Yours is in as good a shape as most that are dug.

I agree. Anyone that has ever dug a tree shilling has lost the right to complain about anything...ever ! :laughing7:

Thanks! It is a great coin, though I wish it held up better. Wish I could join you and others in the Pine Tree club. That is the coin I hope for literally every time I go for a dig.
