A Little Silver Today & Cannonball Frag Update

I went out this morning to a couple of different public spots. The mosquitoes have appeared and are eating me up. Humid and buggy is the forecast for the next 4 months. I have a lot of First World problems.

I like marbles. They are a good omen. So when I saw this one sticking out of the ground, I hoped that it was whole and unchipped, a quick flick of the digger would prove it to be intact.



I have found a lot of Tootsie Toy cars, but today I found my first plane. Surprisingly nice shape for being buried in someone’s backyard for 50 years.



Here is a pic of all of the stuff I got today.
2 Mercs
8 wheaties
2 aluminum tokens: Palmolive & Red Goose
Old valve stem but



This is my 5th year detecting, and I still get excited when I see silver coins in the dirt. These 2 Mercs and a hand full of wheaties were in an old back yard. The house was recently demolished.




Cannonball Fragment Update

You might recall, that a few weeks ago, while hunting with Tnetter, Bergie, on his CW permission, I stumbled across this hunk of iron. I found it amongst all the dropped and fired bullets.



As suspected, it’s a cannonball fragment. Here it is after a meticulous professional restoration. I feel bad for those poor soldiers, no wonder they dropped so many bullets. On this Memorial Day weekend, I’d like to say ‘thanks’ to all of those people that serve their country.

A fragment like that would destroy a person. Scary to think about, but it broke into those size pieces as designed. We should all give thanks to veterans from all the wars and thanks for the reminder buddy.

I too love finding marbles, especially the ones from the 'Cod' bottles, mainly because the kids smashed the bootles to get them out.

Thanks Dave. Your pics and posts are always nice, so that means a lot.

I believe, that marble in your hand is the raw material for making fiberglass products. The wrinkles are the give away. Codd bottle marbles should be smooth and slightly smaller.

Here is a hand full of them, I found in a local mill town, where fiberglass was produced.



It took me quite a while to figure this out. Here are the links that convinced me.

Well, you think that’s the last person to touch it. Sometimes I pick up impacted round balls and wonder if they hit something or someone.

very nice, silver cool marble and the plane, very cool. Yeah, I can't help but wonder when a flattened or deformed bullet is found, who or what it had hit or killed. Bullets that big back then and pieces of a shell did horrendous damage no matter what. Still, part of our colorful history and still an awesome find. The restoration actually pays tribute to the time and the lives lost. Awesome job Tom

Nice variety of finds! Good call on the cannonball fragment, I like how well it cleaned up. Those mosquitos are irritating for sure, I use Cedarcide to keep them off of me.

Thank you so much for this interesting information Tom, I've never heard of this before!
I found this marble in a country farm field northeast of Toronto that started life around 1817.

Here's a pic of it after washing... take care buddy!
