Below is the item in question. Big question at that as to what it is and/or used for. Found in an old NJ park about a foot deep with an E-Trac. Some corrosion but generally the item is in very good condition. It weighs almost two pounds and measures 6.25 inches from top to bottom and from right to left. The diameter of the balls are 1.75 inches. Very ornate and nice to look at. Beets the pants off me as to what it is or used for. Any ideas? Thanks for looking.

I wonder if the balls on the end held some type of incense or the likes, and a Priest held it his hand and waved it like the incense lantern type holders? And it also resembles the cross that is at the base of the cross. It is shaped like a Maltese cross with all points being equal. I'd like to see a close up pic of the other side; is there a point of attachment? What is the material, brass? Does it attract a magnet?

Interesting find, Breezie

That's a cool object, for sure!

I've never seen a 4 section thurible, but, it could be. (what Breezie, I think, is talking about).

Any extra history on the area you found it in?

Go to the nearest church and ask if they're missing a large brass thingy with four crowns/scepters on it.

Thank you everyone for the input.

Thank you all for helping me out on the piece in question, especially to the one who provided a link that will answer my questions fully.

The item was found in a Newark, NJ park. The park grew out of what was once a general meeting place back in the late 1600's. As more folks showed up for the various events, so did vendors and other attractions..eventually boasting a lake with fishing/boating, an amusement park and a horse racing oval in the late 1800's. In the early 1900's a good portion of the park was set aside for a golf course and club house. Parades were common here. A family member found an 1820's militia belt buckle just off the main street. Not too far from said area is where this item popped up. It was pretty clean when it first emerged from the ground. A lot of hot water and soap was first used to spiffy things up. Then it was a good dose of Brasso copper cleaner and what you see is the result. The front and back views are the same...like looking at a golf ball and then turning it around to view the other side. I haven't been to the site where this piece is described in more detail so I'm ending this for a peek at what it is that I found. Again, thanks everyone for your help

Thanks, Yeah you were there.
I'm out here in whacky California . . . so I've actually seen them here in
East-West book stores and the like.
Good refs from other folks too. What a nice community.
