I found this hunting a school yard, I don't know how old the school is maybe 50 or 60 yrs old. It was only about 4'' deep. It looks like it screws on to something. It has a twist function to it that looks like it would allow a light to show through the red glass. Its about the size of a quarter. Any Ideas?

Solved- Thanks to Glasseyed. Indicator light fits the bill. Thanks for all the help.

The pattern of the shield behind the lense is also used to identify radio active materials. Monty

I think its an adjustable indicator light. It can be dimmed as needed. What do you think? You should respond as to whether you agree or disagree. Thanks.

Definetly a light cover...

I work on military electronics for a living. Many devices we have on our ships have these type of covers on the indicator lights.

The way they work is you turn to the right and it opens all the way for the "hazardous waste" look and you can see the indicator light. At night we have to protect our night vision so we turn down all the lights on the ship. Turn this to the left and it closes the indicator so there is no light shining out.

I remember one time in Hawaii we were underway on our ship and I was awakend at 0300 (3AM) to repair one of the transceivers on the bridge. The report to me was it had no power to the remote head. So as I approach the remote head I turned an indicator cover just like the one pictured and the crewman who reported the broken transceiver said....How did you fix that already? What did you do? He was a newer member and didn't realize the equipment had such cover devices and since he saw no lights on the equipment he assumed it was broken. Never even touched it to verify...just woke up the tech to come fix :0(

Anyways...it's a light cover!
