I was talking to one of my friends this morning about my MD. He said he thought it was cool and knew someplace I should go. He said that when his Mother and Aunt were little girls they were playing pirate. They took some of their mother's costume jewerly and buried it as thier treasure. When they came back the next day they couldn't find it. Yep, you guessed it....not costume jewerly but the real deal! They are a rather affluent family and the jewelry is supposed to really be nice stuff. I said it's probably still there unless they've spread the rumor. He said they don't really talk about it because it's a little embarrasing.

Here's the hitch, the house has since been sold and is now a nice Country Club golf course in an affluent neighborhood. Obvouisly I need to get better at locating and digging, but where to do from here. Should we just approach the club and ask for permission? (We being me and my friend. I figure he'd have more of a advantage.)

He suggested a nighttime covert operation, but I'm leary.

If this cache is really worth some bucks go and talk to the greenskeeper, forget talking to anyone in the office. Tell the greenskeeper what you want to do and tell him that you would like for him to accompany you to the area. Show him how you search and tell him that you are not going to touch the grass unless he is present to help and observe. Offer him a cut, say 20%. If he is ok with all of that then you hunt and mark only the few most promising hits then call him on his cell and tell him you are ready to check out what you have found. When he get's back to the site, take him aside to the edge of the rough and show him how you plug and replace the grass. Show him how you can do it and fix it back so no one can tell and then ask if it is ok for you to dig in the same way on the spots where you got a hit...of course you will have already marked these hits with a poker chip or some other small marker. Then he can be there to watch what you do or he can do it himself or he can say no, but that's what I would do. I would include the greenskeeper completely, in the search, the digging, and in the profit.

Chat to the grounds keeper. As most golfers like sunny days, you may be confined to search on rainy and miserable days. Probably weekdays as golfers can be devout with their weekends. I have a brother who is a religious golfer, and I can imagine his look at someone swinging a detector on the course. Your best bet is ?out of site, out of mind.?
Most likely, the landscaping would have hidden your treasure. You should look into renting a GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) rig. That will save you from trashing the course.
As for a ?midnight run? at it... In california, they?d hit you with rock salt (at first). In AL, you might get the barrel with bird shot first... if lucky.
