I was talking to one of my friends this morning about my MD. He said he thought it was cool and knew someplace I should go. He said that when his Mother and Aunt were little girls they were playing pirate. They took some of their mother's costume jewerly and buried it as thier treasure. When they came back the next day they couldn't find it. Yep, you guessed it....not costume jewerly but the real deal! They are a rather affluent family and the jewelry is supposed to really be nice stuff. I said it's probably still there unless they've spread the rumor. He said they don't really talk about it because it's a little embarrasing.

Here's the hitch, the house has since been sold and is now a nice Country Club golf course in an affluent neighborhood. Obvouisly I need to get better at locating and digging, but where to do from here. Should we just approach the club and ask for permission? (We being me and my friend. I figure he'd have more of a advantage.)

He suggested a nighttime covert operation, but I'm leary.

Boy....now that's gonna be hard to convince the grounds keeper you won't leave any trace! Those golfers don't like those kind of holes! HAHA!

Nana ;)

No point in trying to sneak in... it will take a long time to find anyway, near impossible at night.

Get permission.

You might be able to do a covert caddy shack.
Hope your able to get in and find them. Keep us updated. Good luck HH

never know when somone may be yanking your chain for a good laugh or to see how far you will go.
but good luck if you go for it.

Laying down a golf course is a HUGE undertaking, they don't just drop seeds on the ground and call it good. Usually it involves a near-complete makeover with big machines to move a LOT of soil.
I'm never one to say forget it, but forget it. :)

You can be allmost completely assured the stuff isn't in the same spot, that's it's been moved with the rest of the topsoil, or it's buried so deep you'll never ping it.

As an added bonus, most courses not only won't let you, they can't let you detect there. (there is almost always a board in control, and their only job is to protect the course.. "protect" doesn't including letting a guy with a sharp, damaging tool poke at perfectly groomed land. PLUS, for liability reasons, they would never ever let you detect when someone could be golfing.. which is like.. when the sun is shining. And they'd really never ever let you on there at night.) :)

MHO, YMMV, etc. . . but not even worth asking unless it's a rinky-dink run down 9-hole course, and even then the chances are none and none.

/golfer and MD'er. :)

And dear holy-goodness, please don't even consider a covert-night run on this place. If you're caught, you are the single WORST advertisement for the rest of us MD'ers EVER.. and some golfers would consider even the thought of detecting on a nice course complete sacrilege.
My humble opinion.

Being an avid golfer myself for the last 20 yrs. I have to admit that the chances of them allowing you to dig, is slim. But the argument about messing up their pristine golf course.
Doesn't hold enough water, to clean your golf ball. Hundreds of golfers, including myself, farely rape the course weekly, with all their divots and fat shots. They look like their doing test holes for oil wells to be placed later. My divots are generally bigger than the fish i catch. An argument can be made that divots are replaced. But not all are. As we all know to replace the soil, after retrieving a target. The same would apply there. From experience i know the sod can be cut and rolled up and then back. Much like a new lawn. The location might not be on a fairway. Waivers could be signed hard hats could be worn and netting could be placed, to keep from being beaned. In case i'm playing that day. Anyway theres your argument for them. Good luck HH

We're gonna drive by and see what things look like. The house was on the course when they lived there, so hopefully it's in the rough or even out of bounds. The course was already there when they buried thier (my) treasure so hopefully there hasn't been any more landscaping. I'll let y'all know what I find.

I was with Melcrose on this one having been involved with constructing a golf course once upon a decade. There was alot of earth movement and most of the big trees went down as well. But if the course was already there, keep dreamin' brother! My advice would be to buy the mother and the aunt a nice dinner and get them talking about whatever they remember. If that doesn't work, there's always hypnosis or "truth serum". Good luck and wear a helmet! F O U R ;D~CO2

Im a fellow golfer and let me just put it simple. The grounds keeper works a shift of 5am to 9 30 pm. They care more about the grass than there kids. They work so hard.If there is a problem they have 200 Tight @$$ members breathing down the greens crew saying leave or get fired. Wouldnt even try. Night is also imposible. Another thing is there is a alot of stuff buried at a golf coarse.Electrical lines to sprinkler grids, Electrical lines running to pump stations for ponds, underground pipes for a million things, metal tube with holes in it so they can pump air into them and put air pockets in the "turf", sprinkler and drain junction boxes. I can keep going but you get the point But just an idea, well, a crazy one go play there. Rent a push cart rig ur MD to ur bag so you cant see it and well sweep. When you think you have it mark it with something glow in the dark and go back at night and dig it up. Will piss the @#$% of the greens crews lol. But thats just retarded for it wont work. Just my $0.02 from a fellow golfer.

P.S. As a fellow ALABAMA golfer one word of advice. The weather has been tuff on the turf latley and if you tresspass and are digging as fellow redneck they will pull a gun on u. Have seen it done before. There was a black guy driving around the course tearing up the turff. in a caddi (yes the car) and they pulled a gun on him. I know this sounds funny but im not BSing u. Also just thought of something they make man made lakes and sand traps so it could be under those and well u will never get it.

He's dig'n holes for an Alabama chain gang, he just might find it... ;D? ?Na,, I hope not...
My only advice would be to go to them on the off season, ya never know until ya ask....
One of my sites, " The Indian Graveyard " is right next to a golf course, and I wouldn't even dream, well, I do dream, but I wouldn't do it, of going just a little farther over the boundary line. They watch us like a hawk when we're there. I know just 10ft away there are probably more treasures than I could imagine, but I guess they'll have to stay until I get the courage to ask permission...
Good luck & Happy hunting~

you could ask permission to just detect and not dig any holes, when you think you have found the cache probe it and if it feels like the cache then ask permission to dig that hole.

ok heres the way i see it,, if this stuff is really good stuff and worth some wonga,, go take a look and get this person to show ya where the property was,, then you know the patch of land you want to be in,, go ask permission in the nicest possible way,,, if you get the cold shoulder,, leave it for a couple of weeks then go nitehawk the place, just be quiet, vigilant, and as smooth as poss get that stuff and get out,,. when and if you get a good signal and you reckon thats the one just cut a nice big long slit in the grass and open like an operation cut,, extract and put back,, they'll never know you,ve been,, i had this once with a stately home huge place grass like a pool table,, they told me very nicely to get on my bike,, so i left it for around a couple of weeks then i was there at night detecting away, but dont ware headphones,, go get the led socket with the led light in,, this lights up when ya get the signal,, also is better if ya got the lcd display along with the light jack for comfirmation,,, see wareing headphones you aint gonna hear someone coming,, gotta be allert,,,.............

Like when they remove the bullet? :D

Ok.....OK...., I've got it! Ya' go to a junk shop and buy an old weedeater. Take the gas tank and engine cover off of it and duct tape it over the head of your metal detector. Check and see what the grouidskeepers wear and get a similar outfit. Watch the grounds keepers and when they go out to work, slow trail them with your detector/weedeater. Locate your site and start detecting. Don't wear headphones and keep an eye out for a legit grounds keeper. If one of them or a golfer gets very close, yell,"Brrrrrrrrrr, Brrrrrrrr" to the top of your lungs. You can quit when they are out of earshot...unless you just find you like to do that. If anyone tries to question you, start shouting ",Brrrrrrrr, Brrrrrr", as loud as you can. Point to the coil of your detector and then point at your ears and make the old palms up signal indicating you can't hear them. Should work. Almost fool proof! If caught, fake a heart attack. Jump out of the ambulance on the way to the hospital and run away. Excellent! Monty
