Found this buckle in a creek on the edge of the river. Gonna buy the Whitehead buckle book but wondering if anyone has any idea of age. There are no makers marks. Very heavy brass. Thanks & HH image.jpeg

Hello SCJohn. My only input is "Nice one, that's a great find thanks for posting it."

I like finding buckles especially brass ones like yours but I am not a buckle guy and need some education...looking forward to other input.

Good Luck out there. C9

This is only a guess I think maybe a bridle buckle or a saddle buckle from the early 1900's

Great buckle! Can't hazard a guess on the age, but I'm sure one of T-Net's experts will be able to help. Congrats.

Seems I remember seeing some of this type buckle - colonial batwing buckle. Nice Find

Wow! That thing is massive and cool as heck. I would think due to it's size probably for an agricultural application like a saddle buckle or ox harness perhaps. Love old brass artifacts and your buckle was worth jumping into the creek.

Thanks for the input. Sounded like an aluminum can when found it . Only a few inches down in the bend of a creek. The creek itself runs along what once was a prominent plantation in the 1700's thru the 1830's. Not sure if it aligns to that time frame or not. Super cool buckle to display.

Forget those that say 18th C Batwing. The fact it is brass & has an off-set centre bar for taking thick leather shows its horse related & circa mid-19th C.

Aw Cru is probably right, he would have a very good idea. I was leaning towards a shoe buckle for a guy like Shack LOL

I was guessing Paul Bunyon Lost it in the woods!!!!!!!!

After a little lemon juice and a light tooth brush it shows it had some gold gilt at some point. Love it. Packing up to get back out there today .
