We been going thru the old newspaper archives

Utah has a fabulous online newspaper archive (most states do now) that you can spend hours poking around in. Typically, online archives only include newspapers that are no longer operational though so you're going to miss some big stuff unless you're willing to fork over money to an online service. Might be worth it if you know how to recoup your cost.

About 40 years ago I read Penfield's book on Nevada treasures. A couple stories interested me enough to leave LA and venture out for a week. Though I didn't find squat, the adventure and the hunt gave me memories for a lifetime.
