Hi Everyone. don't post much these days but I did get a first today that I thought I would share. From a bag of nickels I pulled a Shield Nickel. First one I've ever gotten from CRH. I also got 19 silver dimes from a bag. The bank manager also let me go through the half dollar bag from the coin counter since it is so slow in filling up. There was $250.00 in the bag and I "rescued 30 40% halves, 2 1964 halves, a 1963 Franklin and what was undoubtedly someone's long time pocket piece - a very worn walker.

Shield nickel is a major find!!!!
(Oldest nickels that I have found: 1903 and 1907 V nickels)

Can you read a date of the shield nickel or walker?

Even without a date the walker is still 11.25 grams of silver!!

Congrats on the shield nickel and the good bag! Are the shield nickels the same diameter as the later nickels? After all the boxes of nickels we search here, you would think one would pop up in a box now and then.

Congratulations on an awesome find. They are very rarely seen in the wild. I think it is a very underrated design that doesn't get enough attention among numismatists. Thanks for sharing.

no hint of a date on either one of them. I'll try nic-a-date and see if I can get a date. As for the walker I'll make it a pocket piece and golf ball marker

where you seeking in WA?

I also am seeking in the Pac NW - Seattle primarily.

DO NOT put nic-a-date on silver... it discolors the silver even worse then nickels. i think it turns black. leave the walker as is! hh
buff

When I put my shield nickel over a Jefferson nickel, it is slightly smaller. Redbook says 20.5 mm for the shield and 21.2 mm for the later nickels.

good to know. I didn't look it up, just figured mine was smaller due to wear

won't touch the walker. I do recall that back in the late 60's early 70's there was a product similar to nic-a-date for silver. We used it on no date SL quarters trying to find the elusive 1916. Haven't seen that product in years.

Was able to raise a date with nic-a-date. It is an 1882
