A Few Of My Better Personal Finds

Everything you see here will be a personal find. No need for any COA's on any of these pieces and I will give info on every piece.

This is a 3/4 Grooved Axe I found in Lawrence county near the town of Miller on a tomato farm. This was found on 12/18/08 so almost 8 years ago to the day. This farm is about a little over and hour drive so I usually only make it up that way once, maybe twice, per year. The only reason I was in the area at that time was having to update my security clearance for the chemical plant I was working for. I decided to go up and check this field since I was only about 15 minutes away and I called my brother and asked where the best spots were since he hunted more than I did. He told to go through the gate to go left to the far end and that was where he found the most.

I headed that way and found a couple small Points and some Scrapers. I stopped and looked around me as I do quite often to see if anything is laying flat out and I saw some green about 25 feet away. As I got closer and could see the edge I thought for sure it was a Celt and I was shocked to see the groove as I got closer. The third picture is what I saw as I walked straight at the blade edge and then I saw the raised ridge.

This is made from Granite Pophyry and I don't have the exact measurements but is a little over 5 inches long. The last two picture show it right out of the ground after washing it off in a ditch line.

This next piece is what I consider by best ever find in my 51 years of hunting. This is a Ft Ancient Effigy Pipe that I personally found in April of 2009. This was found in a small runoff near the Feurt Site in Scioto county Ohio. When I first saw it I thought it was a piece of Horned Coral until I looked closer and saw the stem hole. This is the most pristine artifact I have ever found. There isn't mark or blemish on it anywhere. It is made from a fine grained Sandstone as were a lot of the Pipes from this site. The way the stem hole is positioned, the bowl would have faced away from the smoker and the mouth would have faced toward them. The bowl has been both drilled and gouged out to make it bigger.

Another of my top 5 finds would have to this Bone Flute/Whistle that was found on the same site as the Pipe above. This is made from a Bird Bone and lost likely a leg bone so I have been told. While it will not actually play a tune, it does whistle quite nicely. I had an in situ of this find until I lost all of my pictures in a flash drive crash.

Okay, here's the Clovis. lol

This was found on a site that I hunted for the very first time. I normally hunt a site closer to the river but it was flooded and I couldn't get to it so the farmer suggested the one behind the barn by the road. As you can see in the one picture it was found within a few feet of my vehicle. It is made from a Bird Egg Blue Coshocton Flint and is fluted on both sides with grinding down about 3/4 inch on both sides. I have hunted this field several times since and found nothing but broken pieces and some flint. Just goes to show you never know where you will find one.

Here a some of my top personal finds.

Pic #1 is a Thebes found on the banks of the Ohio River and made from a high quality bluish Upper Mercer.

Pic #2 is a Thebes found near Haverhill Ohio after tests digs were done and abandoned. I found this in their throw dirt. Made from a jewel quality Flint Ridge.

Pic #3. is a Lost Lake found in Lawrence county Ohio on what we called the Dow Site because the property was owned by Dow Chemical. Made from Carter Cave Flint, also know as Paoli Chert, i has a bluish/white streak that runs from the middle of the Tang to just above the tip. on both sides. It also has a quartz inclusion on the back.

Pic #4 is another Lost Lake made from Burlington and found in Lawrence county Ohio near the Goldcamp Farm.

Pic #5 is a Thebes Hafted Scraper found on Meadowlane in Porter township in Wheelersburg Ohio. This site is now under apartments. It is made from what we call Franklin Furnace Green but I have been told it's a variety of Carter Cave. This piece is pretty much pristine.

Pic #6 and #7 are of a large Cobbs Blade I found in 1981 in a very sandy field in the bottom of someones footprint in Haverhill, Ohio. This piece is 5 5/8ths inches longs and very nicely beveled on both sides. It is made from Black Kanawha Chert.

Pic #8 is a Kirk Serrated Point found near Brush Creek in Scioto county Ohio around 1980. It is made from Black Coshocton with "Lightening" streaks in the material.

Pic #9 is an Archaic Stemmed Point with heavy beveling on both faces. Found on the Dow Site and is right at 3 1/2 inches long. Also made from Carter Cave Flint. A buddy and I were walking side by side when we saw this. I was just lucky it was closer to me and I got it first. lol

Pic #10 is an Adena Robbins Point made from Flint Ridge and found near the railroad tressle in Greenup county Ky near the Hardin Farm. I had been having a very bad dry spell and hadn't found anything good in over 5 months when I stopped and ask if I could this guys field and found this within 2 hours of being there. It really turned my year around and I found some more nice pieces after this.

Pic #11 is a Lost Lake found on the Wireman Farm in Greenup county Kentucky. Not sure on the material so if anyone recognizes it please let me know.

May be, but the back side is mostly brown with just a little gray.

Kentucky Hornstone doesn't have the dark colors like Indiana does. So maybe it is Kentucky rock.
