Currently Deus XP, also have 2 Minelab Explorer XS as backups.
Primary Interest:
Relic Hunting
Took off early today, put on my CAMO ;D, and spent 1-1/2 hours at my Civil War/1900s dump site permission. These were all so deep the Deus would not lock in and give me a number, so I was digging by sound. Everything good in there is 12" to 18" deep. 3 x .69 Minie Balls (1 carved, 1 shot, 1 pulled), a broken pewter spoon handle, and the sexiest Eagle A overcoat button I have ever seen! At least 95% of the gilt is on it!

That button is a real beauty! How did you save the gilt? Aluminum jelly, peroxide, or something else?
Top secret method.... on buttons with good gold, (usually obvious after a scrub with a toothbrush), I use Birchwood-Casey Blue and rust remover. Just dab it on with a q-tip and the crusty stuff rinses right off with water after 30 seconds or so. Doesnt hurt the gold at all. Make sure to rinse really well and make sure you don't get the stuff in your eyes. Do NOT do this with raw brass buttons because it *will* burn the brass. Below is another example of how this method works.

Thanks! That is a great button too. I see some people use aluminum jelly, but that stuff can be tough to find. I will look for this rust remover. Thanks again.

Vagent, Well Done on some Great CW Saves. The Eagle A Artillery button is beautiful. You don't find too many buttons in this condition. The 69 cal. bullets are nice too.

Congratulations on the beautiful button.
So you wore the old CAMO eh, such a rebel. :laughing7:
From the dug picture to the final clean up what a transformation, well done.
Not sure if I have ever seen that product up in these parts.

That button came out really nice. That site seems like it would be a good candidate for sifting and or what I call skimming

Thanks. There are a few problems with the site though. 1) In the late 1800s thru early 1900s, it was used as a dump. There is broken glass and rusty metal everywhere. Despite that I have been hunting it occasionally for decades. 2) The landowner is moving, probably be out by the end of the month, and I am not sure I will ever get permission again (its right beside his house), so I have been pounding it since New Years and digging every distinct repeatable signal, especially the really deep ones. Once he moves, I want to be able to say I got as much out of there as I could!

Fantastic saves, Congrats!
It's got to be a very sad feeling knowing you won't have access in the future. Great job making the most out of it!

I just don't know, have not met the new owners yet. They might be ok with it, but I want to get to know them before I ask. I should have told my neighbor to put a clause in his contract, that I would retain relic hunting rights after the sale!:icon_biggrin: roflmao!
