Went with Jim to a new spot today. Dandy after dandy, I think I hit five in a row. Where are those Eagles when you need them. Brick and buttons within the first five minutes and it didn't stop. The pair of NJ Coppers came almost one after the other. Hope your reading this Don. I sure do like finding these coins. A watch winder, a barrel tap, a saddle shield, fishing weight, five tomback buttons, nine dandy buttons, two compass knuckles or folding square. A thimble thats not shown, left it in the work shop. Twenty eight buttons in total. The wire piece is very odd, it has twisted double prongs and an eyelet, its hand hammered copper, very neat. Maybe it sported three eyelets and was for a windchime. Love having early Christmas sites like this. It makes the season just a little brighter.

Wow you guys killed it today. Congrats on the two NJs and that watch winder is really cool. With finds like that its worth fighting the storm.

Awesome Art. Those coppers came out better than I thought. Love that sweet silver watch winder. Can't wait to hit it up again!

Another spectacular hunt!

Sweet relics Arty. Congrats on those two coppers. :hello2:
That barrel tap would look great on a birdhouse. :tongue3:
Congrats to you,
MM

Art, good going, email county if you would or just say same as last. :) I have the attributions, but since some details not showing I want to check with my buddies on both. One is 1786 and one is a 1787. Will give attributions after confirmation..

OK, although I have not heard back from my NJ collectors who usually verify my attributions, I am very confident that your two NJ coppers are: 1786 Maris 26-S (Rarity 5+ which is a strong Rare rarity) and the other one is a 1787 Maris 39-a Rarity 2 (Common). Your 1786 M.26-S is the only one I have in the survey!:hello2:

Wow, that is my kinda digging right there!! I love the relics and coins from that era because you are starting to see the early US buttons, coins, and state issued coppers along with the late colonial stuff. The soil looks like it might be a little kinder than your last field of dreams. That curved shield looking piece was identified in American Digger a while back as a coat tail weight/connector as I recall. They supposedly went on the bottom of the back tails of the long coats and linked together. I will dig out the issue and get a picture of the article for you. I have found one identical to yours.

Those loaded sites are always a ball to hunt. Sounds like you guys had a great hunt, and I'm sure you'll be adding to your collections soon.

Sweet day you boys had out there man

Arty, I dug out the ID on that piece you found in American Digger. Looks like Jim found the other one that would have went with the coat. I took a picture of the original ID which was a "strap tippet". The second picture is the correction which came in the next issue. I hope you can read the print.

Wow Steve your dead on with that ID. I just looked at mine and It would match his exactly. An exact time frame of what we were finding too. I always thought they were some kind of saddle ornament or shield.

KILLER finds and some Great snow pics! Gotta love beating the weather for some excellent finds. Those two NJ's are sweet.

Nice finds, congrats!

Love those coppers. Congrats and continued success in that field.

Great finds, particularly the M.26-S. Although paired with a number of different obverse dies, the S reverse is always scarce. The S reverse is one of my favorites and the shape of the shield and lack of outline make it very distinctive. I could spot one of those from a mile away. Way to go artyfacts!

Thanks Jim, We will have many days like this. Only a 189 acres left to hunt. The watch winder turned a black color when lightly cleaned. I thought it was silver but just a heavy gilding over copper.

Thank you so much Don for the ID. So glad I could help in your survey, and special thanks to the person who lost it...

Thanks Steve for the article. I thought they were horse related. Coat tails who would have thought...

Thanks Buck, overabundance of places to hunt this year. When it rains it snows, and heavily I might add...
