Another post got me thinkin it might be cool to post interesting town or place names with a short explanation about how they got that name. I'll start it out with Dirty Shame, about 7 miles south of Carnegie OK on SH 58 in Caddo County. There were two gas stations at the intersection at one time. One was pretty good lookin and the other one wasn't up to snuff, so people would look at it and say, 'Ain't that a dirty shame', or so the story goes. Dead Woman's Crossing. Northeast of Weatherford OK in Custer County. Actually a true historical reference. When the country was opened a woman was killed there and her skeletal remains were found later on. The original crossing was a little east of the present one. Lots of ghost stories associated with the place, and a lot of SWOSU alumnae will remember it for spirits of a liquid kind.
