Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I went out detecting with my partner and we did not find much. Got bored so I took out my partner's magnet with rope attached and walked over to the fishing pier. I threw the magnet in the water and dragged it the length of the dock, I felt it grab something. I caught a Shakespeare ez cast rod and reel, caught it by the fishing weight it had on it. How's that for a treasure hunt. Spent an hour cleaning it.

I love it!! great ingenuity makes for a great hunting partner. hope you catch a big one on that reel

I remember "magnet fishing" being sort of popular when I was a kid. Some of the magazines back then advertised magnets for that very purpose. I think it started to fade away when metal detecting began to catch on. Some people still do it and still find stuff.

If we could only invent a "gold and silver magnet"

THen we'd be in business!!!!

Thanks for reminding me. I was pulled off the side of the road beside one of the local canals not long ago and spotted what looked like a decent sized safe in the water. I'm sure it's empty but I still wanted to fish it out with my magnet. I wonder if you can get fingerprints off something that's been in the water for a while? I wonder if I should call the cops if it is a safe? What would you do?
Nice catch on the Shakespeare!

I wouldn't assume that it is empty. Some crooks around me stole about $250K worth of coins and gold off of a rich guy and ended up dumping it straight into a couple of ponds nearby. Their plan was to go back for it later. They got caught and the police ended up having to dive for it all. Of course, the police wouldn't release the location of the ponds for fear that people would be doing their own diving. They recovered quite a bit of it but I'm not sure that they found it all. Who knows what some crook might have done in the heat of the moment. More than likely it is empty but you never know until you check. Either way, I would consider going after it if at all possible. They could potentially still get prints off of it. If nothing else it would probably be worth a bit of money as scrap metal.

To the OP, great idea on going "fishing". Harbor Freight has some monster magnets that one could tie a rope onto and go fishing with. My biggest fear would be "hooking" something that is permanently afixed underwater and losing my magnet because I couldn't get it unhooked. Is there such a thing as "magnet-fishing for lost magnet-fishing magnets"? ;D

A cop told me that for being outside for more than 24 hours prints are no good. So for being in the water I don't think they can get prints. I would call them anyway because if your luck is anything like mine just as soon as you get the safe on land a cop would drive by. Then you would be downtown trying to explain what you were doing with the safe.

What kind of fishing weight was on that rod ?
All weights I have seen are made of lead, a non magnetic metal.

Nice fishing pole though.

What would i do i would fish it out some how............ and see if i got lucky............ I would not worry about finger prints............. and i would never call the cops................ The best way to stay out of trouble is to stay away from all goverment officials......................... never get mixed up with the goverment..................... They are for the most part a pain in the a$$..........

I am sorry for not explaining I caught the hook and the swivel and it got all tangled around magnet, I pulled it up to the dock slow because you could see that it wasn't hanging by very much. One of the locals hanging around tried to claim it.
