It's been a while since I have found this many coins on a single hunt. Not as old as I prefer but I'm not complaining. All of these finds came from the field by my house which I use as a "stand-by" field but as you can see, it is still producing. I have found everything from colonial Spanish silver to almost modern at this site. The first settlers to the area arrived at this site in the early 1700s and there has been a house there right up until the early 1900s.

The silvers are two 1903 10 cents and a 1917 5 cent. Coppers are a decent 1859 cent, a 1903 cent and an 1855 PEI penny token. This is the third PEI token found at this site...weird. Also found an old signet ring which I first thought could have been a trade ring but not to be. The silver button is the find of the day for me...heavy silver plate I think but it is old...I think it is a tombac base. It should clean up nice. Thanks for looking.

Purely from an odds point of view I think it's probably tombac, possibly having a high tin content.

Odds are...but I've dug a ton of tombacs and this one is different...heavier and shinier... :dontknow: Even the spot on the front that is damaged shows "silver" inside...

your display cases are due to get bigger and more plentiful....and visits from D'ville, the same

You're diggin' a lot of history there Romeo! While the rings and button are nice, I prefer the coinage myself. Probably not as valuable, but with lots of detail. Thanks for sharing!

I think if you put a slice in any of your tombacs they would look the same.

Excellent finds! That button is a tombac, I'm fairly certain. (Based foremost on the construction: silver buttons I've seen were stamped or cast, not "turned.")

Cheers,

Just an FYI, Candian Dimes are pretty collectible for whatever reason, I have surprisingly sold quite a few over the years. The 1903 is one of the lower mintage year dimes, it looks in pretty darn good shape. And if the 1859 Cent was Brass, it would be worth quite a bit. :)

Nice finds all around.

Even if you don't get again it would be a sweet way of ending off a season. Nice Hunt! :icon_thumright:

Yeah, tombac seems to be the consensus...so I'll go with that...it is probably the nicest tombac button I have found then. I'm not sure of the alloys in tombac but this one is far different from any tombac I have dug or seen dug. It must have a high zinc or tin content which would account for the appearance and weight.

You last few hunts are starting to look alot like mine, except for the tombac. I would take that button over a coin any day of the week around here, its a beauty! And I am honestly suprised to hear that your still hunting this time of year. I'd be out every chance I could get, as long as the snow stays away.

Oh yeah...the button is still the find of this hunt. We've been really fortunate with the weather this year. Rain is forecast for overnight so odds are I'll be into the fields tomorrow.
