Hey all,
Took a while to land a permission yesterday, but I finally spoke with a nice gentleman who let me hunt the fields around this late 19th century (I think) house site. I'm pretty sure it hadn't been hunted before due to the number of signals that were both shallow and high quality. Also, the owner didn't mention ever giving anyone else permission. Since most folks in VA don't hunt places unless they are Civil War era or older, this might be the case. Anyway, I figured since the area is in the Tidewater and was settled in the 1650's some older finds might surface as "background noise" along with any other late 1800 relics or coins.
Here's the home site:
First decent find was this pistol ball which let me know that I might have a shot at some older stuff:
A few minutes later I flipped a plug and saw this. I knew it was old, and I knew it was silver...
Ran to a puddle left over from the rain the day before. Its been knocked around a bit, but its my first Seated Liberty Dime. Its an "S" mintmark
Moving further into the field I got this button. It flipped out of the ground with the backside up. I could tell it was a 2-piece button and was saying "please, please, please" under my breath hoping for a confederate...
Ah well. Its an eagle button and one that a plow has had some fun with. Still I felt it upped the potential for some Civil War era stuff. I wasn't expecting this because there was no real civil war action in this region of the state.
Next good find was this. Here it is after it came out of the ground:
And here is the back at dinner later at night. I have no idea as to what this is or what it's value might be. I've tried doing a few google searches and might just wind up sending in some photos to the Baltimore MD historic society and the Democratic Party historians. So far my guesses are that it might be some sort of token, badge, pendant, or spoon ladle. Either way, its old, its silver (sterling hallmark), its historic, and I love oysters. Easily became the best find of the day!
I puttered around a bit until dusk then headed out. I took a few more hours this morning at the site and found a few more flat buttons and a fired musket ball. Finally, I wound up hitting this my last dug signal for the day. She's not pretty, but I'll take her. Its my first silver quarter since I started detecting again earlier this year, and I've been wanting to find a Barber anything!
Thanks for looking folks,
May everyone find some gold next year!
