Didn't know it at the time, but the LC I dug today turned out to be a classic head.

The date is 1810 (my oldest US coin from this site) and the 6th identified LC dug this year from this large tract of land. It was also quite remote from the other LCs I've dug here. This coin was no deeper than 4 inches and gave a 78 VDI on the Fisher F75. It was the second coin dug in a brief 2 hour hunt; the first coin was also one cent, a memorial.

Note the angled chin, short neck line, and extended bust line, the six stars to the right. The date is clear and appears to be a "10" over "09" variety of this coin.

Here is an annotated view of obverse showing details confirming "Classic" variety.

Here is the obverse and reverse views together showing how areas of remaining detail aided in identifying coin.

Very awesome large cent, congrats

congrats on the copper and the info

Great job you deserve it my friend SWEET!!!!!

Fantastic find, I'm still large cent-less for 2017

Very well done. Excellent ID!

Thanks J.Cache! Were it not for the date on the obverse I would not have been able to id, just enough detail in the right places.

Thanks Art! Just swingin' and then I got a 78; that's a special number.

Thanks Silvermonkey! That's the second Classic Head I've ever dug. The first was a beat up piece that looked like someone put a square nail through it.

Thanks Ken! Puttin' in the time. Hadn't given that area much attention and it paid off on Sunday.

Thanks Thriftstore! Hope to get back to this site tomorrow for another look at the area that yielded this coin.

Thanks cjon! Hunting in the city it was a rare occurrence for me to dig a large cent, but now in the county they're showing up much more.

Thanks dirtlooter! In the south there was a time when "Cotton was king", but that time passed. There was a time in Nashville when "Elvis was king". Out in the corn field it seem that copper is king. Many kings but just one King.
